Do these have tantalum in them? Can't seem to cut them with side cutters, and they don't collapse like film capacitors.

This particular picture is off Ebay. s-l500.jpg

No indication of polarity = not tantalum.

And capacitance is way too low for a tantalum cap that size.

Those are a type of metallized film capacitors made by Western Electric, not sure which. Polypropylene? Polycarbonate? As new old stock they still get a pretty good price for them on eBay. I think guys use them for restoring old radios.

I had a bunch of them on boards, they didn't have the density I would expect from tantalum so I didn't pull them.

Thanks though, as I was clueless as to what type they were, and there is not a good depository online, beyond what is here.

I get most confused by the wet type of tantalum caps.

The ones which confuse me are the caps that look like electrolytics but have the red plastic end plug. Everyone says those are tantalum, but they seem very light weight for their size?

I stumbled across this link earlier tonight, it may be of interest. I had no idea that wet tantalum caps contain a sulfuric acid electrolyte?

This is my blog on Ta caps.

This is a list of part numbers for wet electrolyte Caps this is not 100% complete but a good starting point.

I have handled a few Ta caps and only came across the Cu Ta caps once. Wet caps will have a clear defined crimp around the top unless it is capped fully with a polymer. Ta Ta wet caps will only have a glass bead to seal the cap.

The older styles used the sulfuric acid This is one reason the caps turn black.

This is the data sheet for a very common wet AgTa cap.
