I'm trying to remove the gold from this mug and don't care at all about keeping the gold but instead want a plain useable mug. Will using HCI and bleach accomplish this without harming the finish of the mug? This is the exact mug my grandpa wants minus the gold logo.

Yes you can remove the gold with HCl and NaClO, but the logo that the gold is plated onto may remain.

Thanks! Do you mean the glaze may still show the logo image?

Are there markings on the bottom that may help you find one without the gold graffiti?

Is this it?

Thanks -- Yeah it's marked "SPAIN" on the bottom and I do think it's the same company- Waechtersbach but the one he had (now broken) has the shape, size & color of the one with the gold. I've been looking for awhile and have never seen the mug he had without the gold logo and I've seen quite a few with, so I suppose the one he originally had must have been a blank or something. ? Anyhow, grandpas like what they like and all I can figure is to try to get the gold off and see how it goes.

Worked like a charm! Buffed the glaze a bit after removing the gold and it's perfect. :D
