Read at Boardsort about a "Dallas box" component they did not accepted but stated it should be disposed in a responsible way.

Have no idea what it is. Since it seems to be an hazard it is always good to know what it is.

Anyone?

clock, timer, possibly holds more read only memory data in xoxox form - has a lithium battery typically inside of it -- lots of variations on its shape and color. Most are yellow and will plug into a main board and are replaceable - google it and once you get past dallas cowboy info you will find some in images

Yep. Especially page after page on google that have nothing to do with a “Dallas box”.

Time for more coffee.

Found it.

"The NVRAM battery is a little black box that contains the clock circuit and a small lithium battery. The most common manufacturers of that circuit they are Dallas, Houston Tech, Benchmarq, Odin and ST."

They use "Dallas switch" in the payout schedule about IC chips. Then they call it a "Dallas box" in the forum. I would call it a "Dallas chip".

Dallas was a manufacturer that built real time clocks for computers. They made it in a normal 28-40 pin DIL black plastic capsule with an embedded battery to power the clock and a small internal ram memory. They are really easy to spot on a main board, the capsule is a lot higher than a normal IC.
If you try to incinerate the chip without removing the battery first it will explode when the temperature is high enough to boil the electrolyte in the battery. I guess that is why they don't want it in an IC lot.

There are other manufacturers than Dallas of similar chips, but Dallas was the first to make them I think.

Some good pictures here, even showing the battery in a capsule that is cut open.

Hey, many thanks for bringing to my attention that boardsort has a forum - love it here, but their's so much more up my alley currently - I'ma dig in at the first instance I get some free time...

In the early days of PC's and then PS/2 made by IBM, the PS/2's used
a "Dallas chip" on the motherboards for retaining the CMOS / BIOS settings.
Boardsort doesn't want the CR032's on the motherboards either or any battery.

If you're not old like me, you would look at a Dallas chip and never suspect
that it was a battery. 8)
