hi all,

i am new to refining, i would like to check you experts here.

as i got my hands on HNO3 nitric acid 68% is it the correct concentration percentage for aqua regia?

as my hcl is 33% which i understand its enough concentration.

please kindly advice!

thanks!

Yes, you can use 68% to make AR, I think 68% is tech grade HNO3. That is what i use. HNO3 come in both CP and tech Grade CP is chemical pure and around 70% i think.

Zichuan,

Both of your acids are as concentrated as you'll normally find. They are each as concentrated as they can be made with normal distillation, referred to as their azeotropes. They'll both work fine for making aqua regia.

Jeneje,

The grade of an acid isn't actually related to its concentration, but to its purity. There are many grades including reagent, lab grade, USP, technical grade, etc. Each grade can be available in various concentrations. The difference between 68% and 70% is hair splitting. For our purposes, they all work the same. The reason technical grade is most often recommended is that it is usually the least expensive.

"Tech grade" is a vague misnomer. 68% scientifically is just the concentration where the compound begins to bond with atmospheric H2O and "relaxes" into its stochiometric state.
