All,

I have this tiny pieces left in my stock pile from years ago, here is a close up shot
IMG_6134.JPG

Now here is the mysterious part, I weighed them by placing them on a business card and put the whole thing on scale and set the unit to oz since it shows up to 4 zeros, the weight comes in 0.0560 oz

Then I removed the strange looking pieces and put the business card alone on the scale and it shows 0.595 oz

What kind of metal is lighter than air?? Reallu strange. Your thoughts?

Does your balance have an enclosure? It is very easy for slight air currents to effect weighings. Especially when you have a piece with a lot of surface area like a business card on the pan.

All,

Thanks for responds. My scale is inside a glass box, so no air issue.

I managed to melt it and it looks like gold under the magnifying lense.

Since the uncertainty of your scale is large vs. what you weigh, repeat the weighing 10 times and calculate average

Trouble is 10 times nothing is still nothing.

Time to have your balance serviced.

I always keep a 10 mg and 100 mg certified test weight handy to check my balance when it produces a result I don't expect.
