I came across this tidbit today and wanted to share:

"A team of researchers led by Professor Hiroyuki Yoshida of Osaka Prefecture University and Sharp Corp have developed a new technology that enables the reclamation of approximately 95% of the indium in a LCD."

http://displaydaily.com/2009/10/30/can-industrial-research-turn-indium-green/

And the Wikipedia write-up on indium:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Indium

Indium currently trades at around $250/lbs on the spot market.

Here's some more abstracts of processes for recovering Indium from LCD's, and a pdf file from the U.S.G.S on Indium.

Yes I agree another Box another gaylord and another reason for the WIFE to get MAD.

I have been throwing this away for several years,,,, :oops: But I will start saving them;;;

Can you produce four nines Indium for less than $649 / Kilo?

http://www.rotometals.com/product-p/indiumingot.htm

You might get $1 / Huge LCD, Then you have to recover and refine it.

Stick to Copper. Get Real.

I currently have a gaylord of labtop screens just sitting around. Does anyone know of a good place to take this material. I just have never found a good buyer.

Wondering if anyone on here has done any Indium extraction? I have 25k lcd screens in process and the previous owner was sending them to an industial landfill  From my reading sulfuric acid was was being used.

Indium is a pain in the butt.

If you did that, you'd need to solvent extract it out and deal with a huge amount of waste.

You might just try Umicore.

you may also want to pop off some of those P4 processor tops (lga 486) there is indium under some types

EDIT: this was a gift, was told it took forever to get it & they never want to do it again :)

Hey guys found an interesting article about a different way to get indium out of lcd screens

I don't think there is any mercury in the glass panel but the liquid crystals are poisonous, the mercury sits in the backlight in the cold cathode fluorescent tubes. In case of a LED backlight there is no mercury.

I just collect the narrow tubes and when I get enough I take them to the recycling center... but I'm a hobby refiner. The glass goes there too without messing with any indium.
If you want to mess with indium look at the CPU:s with heat spreader, there you have indium metal.
