Hi,
I have some gold plated INVAR (nickel & iron alloy) and wanted opinons on removing the gold. I have a nice bucket of AP, used it on pins and other boards.

Could someone explain a CELL and how it works. I can get on Steves site but we still have dial-up and can't watch the videos.
Thanks

the cell is explained enough in text on the forum to build one, and the information on how to use it, it would take a littlie time to gather the information up but you will get alot of tips that way also. I dont remeber a video of it but I am usually wrong where my memory is concerned.

The main thing in using the cell is to get the right sulfuric and add abit of water in the solution to speed up the process.

Thanks,
I have done a search for "cell",Cells" but the postings usually only say stuff like "a sulfuric cell would work best" or "use a cell" I went through quite a lot about 12 pages in search but have not found a tutorial about what a cell is/deos ad how.
I shall keep searching but if someone knows a informative post that would be a big help
Thanks again

You'll find tutorials on Steve's site. The needed ID and password are given on this link.

The sulfuric cell is one of the most discussed topics on the forum. You'll just have to wade through the info and then ask questions. Please note that there is a great tendency on the forum to drift off the subject.

Basically, the solution is composed of concentrated sulfuric acid (about 95%) with about 5% water added. You need a power supply that will provide about 6V, more or less. The anode (+) is the gold plated material you want to strip. The cathode (-) can be various different metals - I prefer mild steel. The removed gold falls to the bottom as a dark powder, which is collected using various methods. Concentrated sulfuric is very dangerous if you don't handle it right. Pay close attention to the safety hints in the above links.
