So over 100 years ago and in the interview she said;

In making jewelry you always have a great mass of filings of the various metals used. They are all mixed up and sometimes they are as fine as talcum powder. In order to use them again they must be dissolved in acid and the precious metals separated. The jewelers did not know how to do this and sold their filings to professional refiners, who gave them back the pure metal at a considerable loss.
