Usually cap kits will fix them.

thank jimdoc, do you know those tester a little? how much should i pay to get a reliable (fiable) one?

I have this one, I seem to remember it was under $100 when I bought it though;

You can find others for about $60, and there are schematics and plans online to build your own.

ericrm,

Do you have an analog volt/ohm meter?
You can test the capacitor out of circuit for a short on the ohm scale, you can also test to see if the capacitor charges and discharges, it will not tell you the microfarad but it is a very good indicator if the cap is good or bad.

Some types of the new digital volt/ohm meters have a capacitor test function built in (sears sells one), you want one for the range of microfarad capacitors you will be testing.

You can also buy specific meters for testing capacitors.

Usually you can get a meter for around 80.00 or less.

Check harbor freight the may have a cheap meter (I do not know).

thanks for the info butcher .i have just tryed my regular tester with no good result, now im wondering if i buy the cap tester or just change the full board as the tool cost me more than the full power supply :lol:

You could just try changing capacitors, but really without trouble shooting what the problem is your just shooting in the dark, sometimes it is a simple component burned out and is obvious, or bad solder joints or dried out capacitor.

With TV's sometimes the HOT transistor goes bad (Horizontal Output Transistor), and will shut down power supply (over voltage to tube can cause dangerous radiation),
With TV,s you can usually get kits (HOT transistor and capacitor, sometime fly back transformer), these kit are for the common problem the TV may have.

But if you are not used to working with electronics and TV's, I suggest do not mess with it, there are some killer voltages, and you would most likely have to call the repair man or find yourself another TV any way.

Forget fixing the TV, get the Kiln working, then watch it on Sunday evening :lol:

Or fix your kiln recover some gold and buy another TV.
