I have great material and I'm wondering if I use an old car battery (for acid), would this clean off all my sulphides, oxids, etc. I want a stronger acid than vinegar, tarn-x etc. Anyone have any easy ideas I can throw together from the grocery store?

I would not recommend using old battery acid. If you want sulfuric acid, get new clean battery acid from a store. Also, stay away from the sulfuric acid drain cleaners, they have dyes and thickeners in them.

I have three sources I use for my primary acids:

Nitric Acid 70% - Duda Diesel has by far the cheapest nitric acid if you buy 10L at a time.

Hydrochloric Acid 30% - Lowes or Home Depot sell this as Muriatic Acid. $10 a gallon

Sulfuric Acid 30-43%- Autozone sells it for ~$10 per 32 fluid ounces

Don't forget to pick up a few boxes of Baking Soda (Sodium Bicarbonate) for safety.

**updated with the URL for the non-green Hydrochloric Acid

I will also recommend NOT using the "green" HCl... it contains buffers that can affect in a negative way your processing!
Use their plain muriatic acid.

Take care!

Can you describe the material you have? Unless it is ore, why would sulfides be a problem? By letting us know what your primary material is, we may be able to help you determine which acid is best.
