That's my favorite kind of book!Lou said:Funny you ask, Dear tohp. I'm pretty far along with it, actually. Big problem is that demand would be so small, a sprint run at the printer for a book with so many photos of precipitates, equipment and figures, etc. would be very costly.
I would imagine so. But, there are many avenues of approach for getting a book to market, nowadays. Like gsp and Lino have shown, even an ebook can be of good taste and contain much practical information. For those who demand paper (like myself), a printer is an easy thing to come by. And some local businesses even offer cheap binding. On a side thought of publishers, is van nostrand, Academic press, elsevier, permagon, or other similar scholastic/educational publishers still about? Loewen was published recently, and his smaller books (pamphlets one might say) are color with good pictures...Thats not to say his publishings were cheap..but, Im certain your book will have much more substance than his works... If he can do it, certainly you can
Most importantly, I don't think anyone would read it except for my editors who already signed up (sorry guys!). It would probably be a total snooze festival.
Hah, don't sell yourself short. Even though it would be miles above me, I would still read every word and notate every other sentence in it (only because it helps gain understanding, Im not hubris enough to believe I coild critique anything of yours)
Would rather pen something less technical and more humourous about the precious metals business, starting one in the business, the people I've met in the industry and off this very forum, and some of the crazy, crazy crap that has gone down with some real (and literally, certifiably) crazy people. Perhaps season it with a bit of lite science (not the heavy stuff).
In any case, one could be sure any effort of mine would be way too long, circuitous and roundabout to the max with a lot of parentheticals.

4metals said:I would certainly buy the book, but some configuration of an e-book is the way to go, literally selling a PDF. Since you likely have typed it all out already to submit for publishing anyway. It would be nice (for the author) if there was a way of publishing a PDF that could only be transferred to 1 computer (as in from the seller, Lou, to the buyer) and printed from that computer for a limited period of time so someone couldn't buy it and give it away to all his or her friends.
!
Thats too bad, really, it is... I would very much enjoy reading your narrative. Ever reconsider, do let us know! -or- if you ever just want to talk, and have someone type. -I want to be that guy!4metals said:Anyone who puts the effort into writing a technical book or even a novel for that matter deserves to earn the reasonable price charged for the book, and they deserve not to be screwed by some basement publisher knocking off copies.
VERY true, it takes a lot of dedicated time to push put a book. And, since time is money. That time should be compensated. Additionally, the information contained within would be worth its weight in gold and pgm's, that too, would have value.
The thing about piracy though, is, it has to be in demand, and (for something like a locked down pdf book), it has to have some script-kiddie with initiative (and incentive) to make a keygen or crack the encryption. ....based on the younger guys that join, ask a question, and leave when it isnt answered how they want (or when they find out this isnt an easy gig), I highly doubt any would be so inclined to even want to read a long technical novel, let alone screw Lou.
And as far as me writing a book, not in the cards, between this forum, and letters every month to the grandkids, I'm writ out!
