Hi,

So I have about 50g of SnCl2 powder. Can I make a stannous test solution from it?
I have tried dissolving it in pure H2O, in 34% HCl, and in ethanol. All the time I have been left with a liquid that is colored white, but it should be a clear liquid. Even the tiniest amount of SnCl2 changes the solvent's color. Should I try heating the solution?

I basically have the possibility to make it out using Sn + HCl method, but this requires me to go shopping :) .

Try Lou's recipe:

1 gram SnCl2 dihydrate
5 ml concentrated HCl
20 ml distilled or deionized water
put pure tin powder on the bottom

The tin powder isn't absolutely necessary, but without it the stannous won't last nearly as long.

Thank you! Will give it a try the next time :)
