I have a couple of hundred grams of sterling I want to refine and another 17 ounces coming my way. I am shopping for nitric acid and was confused as to what would be the best buy for nitric acid. There are several different concentrations, grades, prices and container sizes.

I read Goldsilverpro's post on calculating concentrations of nitric acid after dilution. It was that post that made me think of an easy way to get the best price for nitric acid.

To calculate the best deal I used the specific gravity of nitric acid at 20 degrees C. I am looking for some peer review at your earliest convenience.

I did the calculations as follows:

67% concentration
acs grade
1 quart (946.352946 mL)
$100
1.4004 kg/L

$100 / 1.4004kg/L * .67 * .946352946 L = $112.62/ kg of nitric acid

70% concentration
clean room grade
3 pints (1.41952942 L)
$119.99
1.4134 kg/L

$119.99 / 1.4134kg/L * .7 * 1.41952942 L = $85.44/ kg of nitric acid

61.4% concentration
did not give grade, did say it was for gold extraction
8.5 L
$212
1.3739 kg/L

$212 / 1.3739 kg/L * .614 * 8.5 L = $29.57/kg of nitric acid

Since I will be diluting the nitric for silver refining, it looks like the $29.57/kg would be the best deal.

Is my thinking correct?

They're all way too high, it seems to me. If you're in the U.S., there have been much better prices listed on the forum, including shipping. I would keep looking. I think the price from Sandy in Kansas City, in 5 gallon lots, shipped, figures about $10/kg, or $50/gal. Even that is scary, to me. In a 50 gallon drum, I pay $3-$4 per gallon.

Thanks for the tip. I checked on this site for Sandy in Kansas City. I will contact him later today.

I found one person who said that he will not ship to someone's home. I also found somebody from South Carolina that said Sandy shipped it to her home.

I hope he ships to my house.

The woman from South Carolina paid $220, includes shipping, for 5 gallons of nitric acid. That would be about $11.75/kg, way better than any price I have found so far.

Between $3 and $4 per gallon, that would be between $.80 and $1.07/kg. That would be nice.

Thanks again for the tip.
