Found roughly 10k lbs of vintage old PCB 60s 70s 80s 90s. Not sure what to do other than I need to sell them and figure out the worth. I'm all ears! Located in Upstate New York! gold 1.jpegfingers 1.jpegcopper 2.jpegshed pile.jpegmix.jpg

A little background, we bought a barn and house, and the estate of the owner was included and these were a part of the deal. We've been sitting on them for a couple years learning about them slowly. There's a lot to learn and there's also a lot of missing knowledge about boards of this age unpopulated. I still feel like i know almost nothing other than theres gold, copper, most likely palladium (60s 70s), tin, and silver. People use them for art. And people refine them.

Are you here to learn how to refine and process the boards yourself, or are you here to get an idea of what they are worth and sell them?
Definitely not trying to refine myself. Just trying to figure out how to value the boards. Apparently, they are too old for boardsort and CFES and they don't have a history of buying them in quantity for this age.

The organized manner in which the previous owner left his collection will be helpful for you to figure out what you have and it’s value. We have members here who buy boards often but from the more modern circuitry just knowing the type is enough to give them an idea of value. You will need to weigh a section and post photos so members can get a better idea of what it is. You may have to do that for every section.

Start with a smaller section to see what is involved and whatever you do, don’t mix up the sorting the previous owner did. Shoot some photos and get a weight and post it in the for sale section and see how it goes.

You should contact member Mike Swanson. I think his name is mls26w or something like that. I have suggested he contact you. You have a mixed lot. Some of it is very nice, some of it looks questionable. You should NOT send this load to a board buyer. You will get a small fraction of its value.

Thanks everyone for your support and comments. I am taking your advice and getting things sorted and organized tonight. It’s actually quite enjoyable. I will send pictures along the way of cool things I find.

I am
Interested let me know so i can give my contact number
Right now I am in the research phase of understanding what I have. I have spent the evening on phase one and pulling the gold to one consolidated area from the rest. I probably have 1.5k out of 10k of items containing gold. Will report back soon with actuals. But fun images for now to share! my intentions are certainly to sell but it sounds like I should be selling to a refinery from what I’m gathering. I’m still learning. 9774BBF3-4A9E-4BA8-BB11-DBADB68BA3EB.jpeg

Some neat stuff. That round RCA board would probably end up tacked on my shop wall.

As said above - keep those boards in their original groups, and keep any associated labels, notes, packaging, etc in place!!!

I suggest you get in contact with the man's family; ask what they know about the boards- especially where and why he acquired him - plus a little about his work and educational background.

I wonder if any/many of the boards have component ID's marked on them, for instance r22 or c13. Such boards were intended to be repaired. If so, I wonder if there may also be a collection of schematics around.

I suggest you not sell to any one buyer. Instead look for an auctioneer specializing in old electronics. The collector value of a few of those boards could easily exceed the scrap value of the whole lot. Interest and enthusiasm for the history and technology and maintenance of old equipment is obscure but passionate. Give such enthusiasts a chance to see what you have.

There’s is a lot of schematics, there is a lot of notes, there is a lot of rejection tags. Who is an auctioneer of old electronics? As much as I wouldn’t want to sell to a buyer, I unfortunately needs the funds pretty soon. I’m torn

ideally it sounds like the boards need to filter through a hierarchy to optimize the most meaning and value from them.
I personally am artistic and that world is something I understand. The rest seems like rocket science to me. The hierarchy is as follows:

Art>collectors>refinery

Does that make sense?
