Any suggestions on a good book for a beginner to learn chemistry?

I would like to predict the outcome of adding two different chemicals and I will absorb a bit more of the procedures described if I can read the reaction notes people supply when they explain a reaction.

Richard,

The Chemistry comes alive website is really great. It contains videos of all sorts of reactions and covers just about all the fundamentals.
