Hello everyone,

I just joined the forum and received a request for an introduction. My name is Corry and I live in the Orlando, FL area. I am a business owner and entrepreneur, and have recently become very interested in refining metals, not as any type of business venture, but more as a personal hobby that also helps build and grow stackable investments. I am overwhelmed, humbled, and incredibly grateful for the knowledge and information that everyone so kindly shares on this site. I have much to learn and am still very early on in my endeavors, but I am enjoying the process of learning the metals industry, especially the science and the chemistry. You all are certainly an impressive group!

Unfortunately as I'm very early in my journey, I currently have little to offer the forum, and will certainly (at first) gain more than I can give, but I will contribute and give back as I gain more experience and have the ability to do so. I will say that if anyone is interested I have found a great way to remove silver nitrate stains from my hands... lol. Hopefully this will be less important as I improve my techniques, but let me know if you're interested and happy to share.

I thank everyone in advance for any help they can provide along the way, and am very happy to be a part of the group. Take care everyone. Thanks.

Corry

Welcome to us.
Here are some links to need to know basics in refining.
I recommend starting on safety and dealing with waste while you study the book from Hoke.

We ask our new members to do 3 things.
1. Read C.M. Hokes book on refining jewelers scrap, it gives an easy introduction to the most important chemistry regarding refining.
It is free here on the forum: https://goldrefiningforum.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=54&t=19798
2. Then read the safety section of the forum: https://goldrefiningforum.com/forums/safety.47/
3. And then read about "Dealing with waste" in the forum: https://goldrefiningforum.com/threads/dealing-with-waste.10539/

Unfortunately in an area where the predominant liquid is silver nitrate the drips get everywhere and touching them while ungloved is almost impossible.

Back in the day we used potassium cyanide to wash our hands with to remove the stains. Not very popular and risky if you have any cuts on your hands but it did work.

What is your suggestion for the dreaded black hands?

Bleach and goo-gone. Just mix them together and scrub hands with mixture, stains will disappear after a few minutes.
