Ok, I am using lazer steve's ap and then hydrocholoric and clorox methods but I am completely stopped as of right now becuase when starting fumes became so bad I was afraid for anyone aroudn the area. I have been searching and cant seem to find what I'm after.

A way to set this up right to turn chlorine gas back to some solid(or at least some none lethal gas) or some sort of setup that could be done on the cheaper side which would nutralize this very dangerous reactions output quickly and easily. With chlorine gas(mustard gas) that floats aroudn adn settles in areas I worry greatly about doing anymore of this right now!
:?: :!: HELP!

You should ONLY be doing AP and especially HCL-Cl in a
well ventilated area or under a fume hood. No amount of
gold is worth your health or the health of those around you!

I was outdoors and all...doesnt matter ventalation as in a nieghborhood and well it goes somewhere and near someone or some animal...how to nutralize is my question...I realize the fumes are dangerous.

You should be able to find your answer in this search.

The very best way to contain these fumes is to not produce them to begin with. Learn to add the proper amounts of reagents so the excess off gases do not end up floating around your neighborhood. If you are getting copious amounts of off gassing, it means you are adding too much oxidizer. Think of it like this:

If you can see the oxidizers in the air, they are not in the solution dissolving any gold. All off gases you see or smell are reagents you have wasted to the environment instead of doing work in your reaction.

If you find yourself being heavy handed with the reagents ( mainly the oxidizers : nitric acid, hydrogen peroxide, Clorox) you can capture the fumes with teflon tubing and pipe them into a scrubber set up with a high surface area substrate and a solution of lye or a carbonate solution.

With nitric acid there are methods of using hydrogen peroxide to contain the fumes in the reaction and extend the usefulness of the acid. Also refluxing the gases with extend the usefulness of the acids.

There are several posts on the subject of scrubbers, refluxing, and fume hoods that will guide you in these projects.

Please be safe,

Steve

Just an update I've done this about as cheap as possible. Main materials were stuff I had around or picked up from people I knew. Only costs so far for my fume hood/scrubber have been labor(mine hey time is money!), 1 part epoxy paint($20), and some hose clamps I used(bout $13). Got my air going with a free motor and a free old pump from a pool for moving the solution over the stack of fillers!!! Thats actually pretty cheap...just takes time! Some pics attached of current situation...its almost done!
