A friend saw a news clip of this Iranian (?) who homeland security was watching, they caught him on tape buying alot of peroxide from a beauty supply store. And apparently they also found alot of muriatic acid in his home. They said that you can mix certain amounts into a paste with whatever else and it makes bomb material. My friend didn't catch everything on the clip, but I was wondering (and I can't find the reaction list on this forum right now) if I could get in trouble with the law for having both those chemicals in use on my property? I know this is a stupid question, but I don't need anymore hassles with the law. Yvonbug

Most likely not unless you have the other chemical in similiar quantities that it takes to make the material.
Most know what it is but I am not telling.

Also, may depend on other stuff like the sites you visit.

who know about the gov, I just try not to have that stuff around.

"But I'm not telling" cute. Don't worry, I sure don't want to know. But, now that I think of it, earlier in this forum, maybe a couple of months ago, I put a list of chemicals up that I was getting rid of, old stuff in a box in the basement. I looked up most of them, and got rid of the explosive kind, the real oxidizers and such. But I still haven't got rid of them all. Even if I don't know the combo's, I sure wouldn't want some uninformed cop to holler "terrorist!" at the sight of the stuff. Don't take me too seriously, I'm just yakking right now. I just woke-up and have got the "what-if's" mood. I'll get my coffee and snap out of it.

Behavior is a key component, almost every house has stuff in it that some hard+++ could scream something about.

From the article I read it said he was also buying nail polish remover which is acetone to make the bombs. I did not see anything about muriatic acid.

It is highly unlikely that there is a house in the US that does not contain the proper chemicals to make a bomb of one kind or another. The concept of regulating chemicals to prevent such an event is ludicrous.

It is however a justifiable concern that some refining hobbyists are worried that the chemicals they buy may label them a terrorist.

My advice is that in the event that you have visitors you should have just cause for the peaceful use of the chemicals you possess as well as be able to explain their use in detail for the precious metal refining processes you use.

Having material data safety sheets for all chemicals you possess and the chemical processes to be followed for their use is a huge step in protecting yourself from false accusations. Input and yield data notes are not only useful to you but they show what you have done with the chemicals you have in your possession.

Showing that level of professionalism in your endeavors gives you a business status registered or not.

Possession does not show intent.

A similar analogy could be drawn to someone who has a soda pop bottle emptied from their thirst, matchboxes for their cigars, tincture of iodine for cuts, and pseudoephedrine for their running nose. Are they doing anything illicit? No. Could it be construed that way? Yes.

I think much of it comes down to circumstances, and as Oz mentioned, a degree of professionality. If you can competently explain what you're doing with your chemicals, why, and how you are safely using them, I doubt that anyone would want to deprive you of your constitutional right to happiness.

About a month ago I had a knock at the front door.

It was the police. RCMP here in Canada.

They had a complaint of a strong Chlorine smell coming from the neighborhood and wondered if I knew anything about it.

I immediately told them yes and asked them if they wanted to see my operation in the backyard. They said oh yea that would be a good idea. I explained to them how I was turning scrap computer parts into gold salt with concrete cleaner and bleach, then filtering all the cheap stuff out then using beer bottle cleaner to turn the salt into metallic gold.

Since I had several beakers (all labeled, very important) in various stages of the process and a ball mill loaded with cpu's , it was pretty strait forward what I was up to. It helped (I think) that I had my storage container (crock pot) LOG BOOK that showed all my additions of refuse material, and that I was not just dumping it into the toilet.

They had a good laugh and asked me were I learned all this stuff..... I said the internet, they laughed and suggested they might like to try it. I told them they should it's a lot of fun, just like panning for gold.

As they left, a dark van pulled out of our alley way. I think things could have got bad if I was not completely open and forthcoming with complete answers to all their questions.

Hi LeftyTheBandit

Code:

I know about Steves videos but I would like to know more about this process.
beer bottle cleaner, concrete cleaner is something new to me
Thanks very much

That’s hilarious Lefty! Creative on your feet to be sure, yet honest.

Concrete cleaner = HCl (muriatic acid)
Bleach = sodium hypochlorite
Beer bottle cleaner = SMB (sodium bisulfite)

I use this for cleaning my drains.
I use this for cleaning my driveway.
I use this for making wine and beer.
I use this for washing my clothes.
Refining gold? How do you do that?

Lefty, lucky you weren't in the US in some more jumpy areas. You might've gotten a citation and a follow-up visit from one of our bloated government bureaus (i.e. parasites).

With all the oversubscribed fear and loathing that this country seems to feed on, I'm surprised we're still allowed to have even toothpaste and soap.

All kidding aside the fluoride in toothpaste if recovered is worse than the sodium hydroxide from the soap. HF be in that there toothpaste.

In my parents county they already have a flush tax for citizens that have a private septic system. No ****, parden the pun.

Then again I expect a permit required to wipe my a^^ in the not too distant future.

ball mill loaded with cpu's

Hi LeftyTheBandit
I was wondering about this process
Do you crush everything and then all the stuff in muratic acid
like steves videos
Can you explain this a bit
Thanks

I treat the cpu's before ball milling. (majority of recovered material)

Then I ball mill and treat again. (my ball mill is very inefficient, the crushing media 'bolts' are not traveling high enough to fall onto the cpu's)

I'm building a mobile furnace so I can incinerate the eDust as dealing with the mush is not prooving fruitful at my current skill level. To much material for the chemicals required to process and the fumes that go along with it. The AP is not that bad, I load the crushed cpu's into a plastic water bottle and add the ap then let it roll in the mill with no crushing media.

Where the problem starts is the bleach HCl step to remove gold from the mush. The fumes are hard to control with the large amount of mush that needs agitation but it resists agitation due to being mush. I've put this on hold until I can think a way out of this.

I would use the same ball mill treatment with acid bleach but the fumes.... I guess you could have a bearing of some sort at the mouth of the bottle to hold a vent tube then treat the fumes but it is beyond my ability to create that type of venting system. If you just contain the ball mill in a fume hood that would probably would work. I have not tried this idea.

I could see cyanide being an alternative treatment as It can be used very diluted. The only thing stopping me is the amount of acid I have around and the lack of space to create an acid free zone.

I am researching Iodine-Iodide leaching at this time. I have one reagent to collect before I can start. I'm concerned on the recovery of the iodine after the process of introducing the iodine-iodide to eDust. If my recovery of Iodine is successful I will pursue this method of treating eDust. So I'm going to start very small as iodine is expensive and slowly increase scale.

Right now I'm in-quarting karat gold and the success keeps hogging my time. The eDust is the future but I'm finding a lot of ways not to do it at the moment.

LeftyTheBandit:

Here's a thought for your ball mill. It may be too small a diameter, but pick up a couple cast iron 3 or 5 lb dumb bells with the round or hex end and cut them into three pieces with a hacksaw. Each end and the handle. Then use them along with your bolts. That should improve your milling. I found mine at a garage sale cheap. I bought a old semi truck rim and welded ends on with a small access door for mine.

Hi LeftyTheBandit
Thanks for your reply

I can see that you are still experimenting with techniques.
I was wondering how profitable doing this was.

Lefty,

You should also consider welding a lifter bar into the mill. It will lift the balls up and drop them on the material you are crushing. ****'s suggestion about the weights is a good one if you can't come across balls for the mill. The balls do get expensive.

What do you mean by hogging your time?
