Never use a heatgun in a motherboard or phone board if they have a battery inside then.
Notice: The cellphone board has small Li battery in the board and you can think it is a small IC or other device.
This happen with me when I was using heatgun in a motherboard, the heat was point to a south brigde, more or less near the battery.
When I notice, the battery exploded and get fired. This happened because inside the battery, has H2 a explosive gas.
Use a safety eyesglass when heated a board.
The photos are exploded battery and no exploded.IMAG1164.JPGIMAG1163.JPG

Yep- removing the battery is always the first thing I do to a mother board. I guess this exploding battery thing is why outfits like BoardSort are so intent on us removing the batteries before we ship boards to them. Good to know.

Geld,

I'm not sure about lithium ion batteries have H2 gas inside them. Metallic lithium will react with water to liberate H2 gas. But lithium itself is highly reactive and flammable. It is usually stored in mineral oil. Once a sample is taken from the mineral oil and allowed to dry, it will self ignite in air. Once your battery case failed from heating, the lithium would be exposed to the atmosphere and that may have been the fire you witnessed.
