Hi all,

I have a collection of very old capacitors. Of course I would like to find out if some are with tantalum or silver, but I don't know how to be sure, there isn't PCB in them. Any ideas, links etc.? Would a ion mobility spectrometer or a photo ionization detector show anything usable?

Have a nice day!

Try a search of tantalum and dog bone capacitors, there has been many posts (also try mylar).
common word like silver and capacitor would probably get you lost, you need words that would not be as common.

Pleace take pcb very serious, it is one of the most nasty toxsin the world ever have seen.

PCB was in the old oil filled capacitors can type capacitors, and transformers, not the types of capacitors, or transformers normally soldered to circuit boards, some of the oil filled capacitors and transformers were small and others very large holding gallons of oil.

Thanks very much for the hints!

I will take some photos of them and post 'em. Maybe it is possible to determinate which ones are safe and with PGMs. And the rest will be laid into professional hands.

Thanks for this info butcher. I just got in 165# of caps and 100# were the oil filled paper style. they look surprisingly like Tantalum caps. The can is made of the same hard nonmagnetic metal and they both have the same glass sealed ends with the nipple sticking out of it. also with nickel leads. it seems that the larger caps over size "D" are suspect as being oil filled paper caps.

if you look at my thread you will see different types of Tantalum caps. the picture with all the can style the top left corner are six or so pics of silver cased Tantalum caps. I have some more to take pics of but something to look for is silver oxidization most will be from the wet electrolyte style Tantalum caps
