Can you describe the powder?

Seems to me that it could be processed with HCl or sulfuric to remove the iron before attempting to recover the values.

harold;the powder is brown and was obtained with formic acid -reduction of ar--when i got the powder ,i passed hno3 1:1 to eliminate copper and silver----the powder left which i thought was gold alone was magnetic --that is why i deduced that was gold containing iron---thanks arthur

I would recommend an incineration process before applying any new acids to the recovered material. That will insure that you do not dissolve any of the values inadvertently.
