Precipitation with SMB Question

When you have gold chloride in solution, is there a difference between adding SMB powder directly to the solution vs. mixing the SMB in water and then adding the mixture to the gold chloride bath?
I know that LazerSteve shows the SMB in water, but is this a necessary step?

in water solution better, if powder dropped in it clumps, your gold is in Ion form,so if your sulfite too, they work better together. giving off SO2 gas instead of (picking up copper if in solution)and falling to bottom to dissolve or floating on top.
