I went to a scrap yard today that my friend owns, he was going to dispose of the tubes in cars he crushes. Once I got there he checked the tubes with a counter he has and they showed up with radiation. Has anybody heard of this before???

Not until you mentioned it. But here is a CRT patent containing thorium and hafnium. Both should be somewhat radioactive. There may be others in the phosphors or in the emitter.

I have heard of Televisions putting off radiation, but I only thought it done so when running, their is a safty shutdown circuit on the High voltage section of circuit board that will shut down power if high voltage gets too high, this would cause tv to put out more radiation, the HOT horizontal output transistors are a major problem with tv sets going bad, some times a repair kit will include a cap and inductor and of coarse the new HOT transistor.

Never heard of radioactive materials being used in TV sets.
