I don't understand why they keep making "new" discoveries on things already known. Other than talking about the instrumental probe or the crystalline structure on a nano scale.
Money. You submit a grant request to get money to study something... anything. They grant you the money. Then you get to spend the money on your research... and yourself.
In my time working in neurology in a teaching/research environment, many of my doctors received much of their compensation through grants. Sometimes they discovered something new. Sometimes, not. Didn't matter. It all paid well.

It's the reason my daughter stopped at a masters instead of getting her PHD even thought she got a free ride for it.
She didn't want to spend 80% of her day writing grant requests just to keep the university rolling in money.

What type of "leaching" process would be more "eco-friendly" than pressure oxidizing? THAT might be interesting to know....
