Thanks for the response, All my procedures are carried out with a watch glass, barely do I remember doing any without it.. I have seen some fume emissions but if they can be controlled by so much then I think as you have mentioned it ahould be okay. On the other hand I redrew the diagram based...

    advice on fume scrubber _fumescrubber_

Correct, a hood is not needed, as that thing would burn up valuable real estate. But the point I'm making it works and it's stealth.

Yep, I like that curved hood as well. A Lot!

This will work only if the fan is able to create strong enough suction. The best solution for you I think, will be a vacuum system by water-jet venturi and a slight suction in the hood. That can be scrubbed by misting in a 200L plastic barrel or similar.

...to 2" should be continued as 4". Sounds worthy of a try. Since the system is configured to test a few configurations it should not be too difficult. However if the air can somehow blow into the hood rather than drawing from it, there is need for extending the pipe past the hood intake.

Such thing as a fume hood out the box ready to go?

I’ve been looking for a fume hood for metal refining, seen a lot of info on building fume hoods, but not sure if I’m up to doing that to be honest. I’d hate to build one that doesn’t work well and turns out to be unsafe. Is there such thing as a fume hood that you purchase and can operate safely...

...the fan on so I can move the 2 inch pipe back and forth inside the 4 inch pipe until I find the spot that creates the maximum suction from the hood. Once I know that spot I can make it more permanent. I also might increase the intake as ChopperGregg suggested but for now will continue using...

That picture must be when it was newly built.... I don't see any silver nitrate or hydrochloric splatter staining........ yet. I've been using mine since 2018 and it looks like a modern art painting ...:)

Was that a Rubbermaid trash can shed? I've always thought they would make a good starter hood.

You do not want to compress the air leaving the hood as that will reduce flow. The taper needs to be inside the pipe. When I get to my laptop this evening I will post a drawing of the taper inside a duct from Ammens book.

melamine fume hood build more space? or better air flow?

Hey man thanks for your input Ive got two new drawings to account for your suggestions I'm sorry they are so bad but what do you think of this? I'm thinking of just using rigid schedule 40 for all of the ducting up to the ceiling and then converting to a PVC dryer vent type ducting to the roof...

Nothing you have here are suited. You want tallish containers, they can be thin but should be tall. Next, they do not have to be inside the hood, only the reaction vessel/beaker need to be in the hood.

melamine fume hood build more space? or better air flow?

I think this will get you close Area of Face of hood 4 x 2 x 100 Inches to sq feet wold be Area /144 ( to get sq. Ft. ) x100 for cfm So if you have bends I think that reduces the pressure and the length as well . Good luck I’m also working on a hood Going to harbor Frieght now for a 1500...

    So close ….

Can I remove it by rerunning through a cell. I believe the containments came from so called stainless steel wire ties I used as a cathode in a 2L flask. Back to the drawing board . Venturi for fume hood yet to be built as well .

Welcome. Sadly ductless hoods are non existent for chemical work. You will need scrubbing the fumes.

    Refining with Hot Plates

With a proper fume hood and scrubber, you could do it in your kitchen. Mind you, it still needs to be ducted to the outside. The problems with doing it in a garage, or your kitchen, is outside interference from the unknowing, such as pets, children, etc..This is why a dedicated lockable lab is...

Oh OK I it it I think is the box deal the fume hood? If so what would be the cfm of the fan I would need? If the beakers are going to the vac what's the box represent in ur illustration? I thought it was the hood.

When you find the sweet spot for the tip of the smaller pipe in relation to the hood penetration, let us know what distance that is. The more input we get from DIY folks the closer we can come to perfection.

I am assuming that @didit has extended the section of smaller ID pipe to a point past the sweep from the hood below. The drawing is very nice but does not indicate what is going on inside the pipe.

Then there is no need for the traffic cone. The purpose for the traffic cone is to create a restriction, so one can utilize the venturi effect to suck from the hood without dragging the corrosive fumes through the fan.

Yeah, I can relate to this. We have rated hoods in our workplace, and it is hard to cool them down in the summer - as the AC unit try the best to cool the air in, which is in turn exhausted out... :) Wasteful practice. We do have phase converters (or inverters? - basically the circuit that...

I've still have a lot of work to do on my dyi fume hood but thought I'd share an update of the contraption I put together to try and find the best air flow spot. With this temporary cart I can move the fan back and forth so the 2 inch pipe can be at different spots inside the 4 inch pipe. I...

Hi newby here, I'm wanting to start up a leaching process using Jin Chan and carbon, so far I have the Jin Chan and carbon and some sample dirt .

International Bulk Container. I believe Deano posted a thread about using one for leaching ore. They also make the basis for a great fume hood.
