    Looking for learning,

...it is a set it and forget it process. Then you can work on what ever else you do in the mean time. One important thing with both the Nitric and AP process is that the sheets ned a separation so the acid can contact the whole sheets. When it goes for yield it is a risk that pregnant AR can be...

My Plan - New to Refining. I would love a review please.

HCl does not dissolve copper or other base metals from brass or bronze. And you just spent a lot of time to put copper in solution to separate it from the pm's. Cementing it all back out sets you back to having a mix of copper, base metals and pm's. Which is a waste of time and chemicals.

This is a very good point. Theoretically, wouldnt HCl bath prior to ap/ar treatment dissolve most of the base metals? Ive beej reading Hokes book and this also has been mentioned. I have been doing HCl baths before anything else. Ive cemented copper and it looks to be relatively pure. If i ever...

    AP Colour Question

...As the gold goes into solution the copper ( or base metal) on the boards cement it back out. This is very fine powders so fine that the gold appears brown. Due to particle size it does not reflect light so we don’t see the yellow gold but only brown dust. This repeats itself until there are...

...it alone, with a bit of time. HCl two parts to one part water will do the job. If peroxide is needed at all per gallon of HCl only use one to two cap’s full. You only need to convert the copper to AP, or what is actually copper(ll)chloride. If the forum is well researched on this CuCl2, there...

Ok general question on which process to use for different type of gold...

Many use Cupric Chloride aka AP on GF and it works well as far as I understand. Slower than Nitric but much cheaper and forgiving.

For Sale ~15lbs of gold plated pins.

I've actually been trying all kinds of recovery, trying to find the most suitable. The solid pins, I disolved base metals with nitric, the disolved foils in AR. That was very time consuming and used a lot of nitric for a small return. The pogo barrels went into copper(2)chloride leach and took a...

Copper coil with nitric acid and AR

Some PCBs ar full plated with gold specially RF telecom boards, when use AP or nitric to get gold foils I got less amount of gold, so I prefer to dissolve everything to better results.

AP Waste Solution will not clear - dirty transmission oil

This is good advice. Thanks. I did label everything except the sulfuric acid and at 2am I made the mistake of pouring it into my AP waste and went to bed. No more late night chemistry for me :) I'm going to neutralize, use iron to drop metals, filter and dispose of solutions. Re-refine the...

How do you know if AP solution is saturated?

...of a screenshot why did you not post the link so we could see the development of the thread and age as well. There has been a development here, the reason it is called AP is the in the beginning we actually used Peroxide. Today we really do not recommend using Peroxide but rather corroded Copper.

Aqua regia process post sulfuric stripping

Why do you want to use Nitric on something that is stripped already? And the exceedingly few boards with this much Gold will be better treated in AP directly. Maybe Nitric directly if the amount of solder is not excessive.

    AP Colour Question

This dark color is why pins don’t work very well in AP. It uses up large amounts of oxygen on base metals. This is also part of why it is used on fingers, and very clean boards of the right type, it works best on the finger/ board materials. It is also best to use a large excess of HCl for AP...

...of the light brown sands...!! Thanks for the tip. The filters are golden brown-yellow with a grey paste (tin)?. AP Questions

Hello All, I have some questions regarding the AP solution where I am using HCl with 34% H2O2. The media that I am processing are trimmed fingers from obsolete RAM and GPUs, and scrapped out clean (free of components and solder)PCMBs. The solution does a great job of removing the gold from...

12.5KG of Ram fingers from 180KG of cards

Hello Stewill, That’s an impressive amount of RAM fingers. I’m curious—how much 24k gold were you able to recover from this batch? I’m about to begin refining with 2 lbs of material and would like to gauge whether it will be profitable or if it’s more suited as a hobby.

    Magnetics and non magnetics

The golden ratio is no Peroxide. Use an aquarium bubbler and bubble air through the HCl.

    removing gold from copper?

Copper chloride significantly catalyzes the reaction of dissolving gold in chloride solutions.

    Waste disposal questions

Mainly HCl and H2SO4, because nitric has no place in waste solutions. (should you still have nitric in your waste, then it's not waste! ;) ) We do not use many other acids in gold and silver refining. The best way for me is soda to create hydroxides and neutralize the acids. Lime also works.

Just a Newbie thirsty for knowledge

I'm OK with removing base metal pieces from gold filled scrap. Just be sure to rinse them thoroughly into a separate container and keep the rinses for any gold that may have cemented out on the base metals. You can add them to the gold foils you get at the end of the AP process. If you have...

    Palm to head moment...

Yep...I made that mistake when I first started (2014). Fortunately, I didn't have very much in the garage at the time, so damage was pretty limited. Hydrochloric fumes are pervasive and persistent.... no matter how much cleaning and ventilation you do, stuff will continue to rust for months...

Green is fresh good copper 2 chloride, darker is more copper 1 chloride. When that gets saturated, it precipitates out as white slimy gelly stuff. You want it to be green, not dark.

    Need information on acids

As with most chemistry questions. Yes and No, depending on conditions. I’m away and using my phone now so it is not the best for replies. If you want to recover all, forget chemistry and simple. Definitely forget easy and cheap. It WILL get complicated and expensive.
