I came across 8-9Lbs of gold plated necklace chains. Most are in good condition. I was wondering what would be the best way to recover my investment. I am trying to sell as individual necklaces, 1 Lbs. tangles and also thinking about pulling off the plate somehow. Does anyone know how much plating would be in 9Lbs of necklace. It would have a very high surface area and i don't think the estimate formulas would apply for 9Lbs of chain.

PS. I live in the beach communities of Los Angeles.

I can send photos if you would like. Too big to post.

Are you positive they're just plated, not gold filled?

If they are, their value isn't worth the effort to screw with them. I'd attempt to strip the gold, then sell the base metals for scrap value. Plated gold chain doesn't have much of a life cycle, quickly turning young beautiful necks green.

What you really should do is use a photo program to reduce them in pixel and file size, so they can be posted here. Many of us, myself included, have a dialup and don't want large files sent.

Here's a link to a download of what is a very good program, and it's free. http://www.irfanview.com/

I am unsure of their exact makeup. How can I tell the difference between the plated/filled?

Gold jewelry is usually well marked. If you understand the terminology, it's easy to know what you have.

Look at the end with a clasp. There's usually a small tab that is a part of the chain/clasp assembly. On the tab you will read the pertinent information. Gold filled might read something like 1/10 14K GF. Karat gold would be marked simply 10K, or 14K, or even 583. Plated may state just that----gold plated----or even something like RGP (rolled gold plate). If you find no such tab, your chains are most likely just junk jewelry---flashed with gold and hardly worth the effort to recover the traces of value, although I'd still do so if they can be stripped with a cell. Processing with acid would likely be a losing proposition. Costume jewelry is almost valueless.
