hello all i have been on here for some time trying to learn some new things/tip&tricks...

my name is Wes AKA The Gold Pirate ... i am 38 yrs old married and have 3 wonderful kids (16g,14b,9b) and a wonderful wife of 17years as well... i am a prospector ... i dredger mostly, but i also have a high banker, trommel, shaker table...i have built all my own prospecting equipment in my shop at home.... i am a vet , US Army 54B20 OPE Chem Company. Chem Unit #2
i have started to scrap computers & cats and other electronics.... i am needing some help from some of you on this forum....

i am wanting to extract the gold, silver, platinum from computers and other electronics.... i am wanting to do this as safe as i can.with as little cost to me as possible ... i know there is going to be some cost and all to me... but the safety is the main thing to me...
i have well over 200 computers tore down and put the parts into it own bin ...i have kept every thing from the Ram,hard drives, chips, mother boards,CPU's Ect. MY QUESTION IS?>>> what do i need to "EXTRACT the Gold,Silver,Platinum from them??
I know Acid will do the trick but what kinds do i need and in what amount do i mix them together..and where do i get them... i live in a small town in Colorado!!

Now on to the CAT'S i have close to 100 of them torn apart and have ground them all to a fine powder .. what do i need to get the PLATINUM, PALLADIUM and RHODIUM out of them... as you know there is a layer of mesh type stuff around the honeycomb that has a shinny silver looking substance i also kept.. what is it do you know or do i just mix it with the rest of the honeycombs?? .. but i put it into its own tub away from the crushed honeycombs .....

what type of FLUX do i need to smelt it down and poor it into the molds... is it the same Flux ,I use for smelting my Gold from the black sands.. and taking the impurities out of my fine flake/flower gold... before i make my 999.9 fine Gold Buttons.... any help on this would be great... i have plenty of room in my shop set aside for this project and plenty of air circulation in the shop as well.... like i have said my main " CONCERN IS SAFETY FIRST " !!!!!

Hi Gold Pirate,

Welcome the forum.

The answers to your questions are all in the forum...somewhere!

As you can imagine, explaining each process in detail to every new member gets a bit tedious
after a while, so i'm sure other members will tell you the same; read, read, read the forum.
Look for posts by Lazersteve, he has a link to the newbies guide, well worth a read.

If you are going to do cats, get a copy of Lazersteves DVD on the process. It works.

As for safety, you are right, safety is always the first priority especially with inquisitive kids around.
Plenty of advice in here, just need to poke about and look for it.

Regards
Buzz

Don't hesitate to procure a copy of Hoke's book, which will teach you the basics of gold and pt. group metals refining, and also how to test. Be patient, as well. You will not read one day and be functional the next.

As you have been advised, do not expect anyone to hold your hand, dispensing step by step instructions. Anything that you need to learn has been well discussed on this forum, much of which was very demanding of time from those with knowledge. To endlessly repeat the same information time and again is not in the best interest of anyone, so follow the links provided in Lazersteve's sig line, then consider making purchases of his well prepared DVD's. With just a little effort on your part, and some dedicated reading, all of your questions can be answered.

Above all else, read Hoke's book. Without a basic understanding of the refining process, you will struggle at every turn when the smallest thing doesn't go as hoped.

Luck! And welcome to the forum!

Curios---and you need not post your location. I have a sister in Delta, Colorado. Anywhere near? If you'd like to respond without disclosing, feel free to PM me.

Gold Pirate:

Welcome to the Forum!!!!!!

As Harold_V has told you,get Mrs. Hoke´s book, read it,then try to get Steve´s videos about catalytic converters and you have to work hard.

You will need 15 old computers just to get 15 microprocesors which yield to 2 or 3 gr of gold, older computers have more gold than newers.

Pins and gold plated items could give you a nice gold nugget too.

Do not despair, this is a complex process.

Have a nice day

i am in a little town in the Northeast corner of the sate by Sterling Colorado ... i know where Delta is i prospect for gold up there with my 3" triple sluice dredge and my trommel as well... my dad has peach & grape vineyards by Palisade Colorado... this year so far i have gotten well over 13 ounces of GOLD from the rivers and streams here in Colorado....i have also found some real nice Diamonds too !!!!

Most of the computers i have torn down are the older ones.... and where from the old 1995 to 2000 computers...

That's an excellent report on your ventures. Not many can claim that kind of success.

Thanks for the comments on your location. I know very little about Colorado aside from having spent a little time in the Grand Junction/Delta area.

Have you found any nuggets, or is the bulk of your good fortune small bits of gold?
What about the diamonds? Anything worth discussing?

Harold
