First of hello, my name is Ben. I am here to learn as much as I can, still have yet to get Hoke's book. Mainly I'm interested in refining on a hobby level and eventually try some casting after my 3d printer comes in.

There is a printable version of Hokes book available on the forum, I like my commercially printed book and still think the money I spent for it was a good investment.

If you wish to do this as a hobby, Hokes will give you the basic principles you need and also help you understand the languages we use, so that you will be able to carry an intelligent conversation about this topic of recovery and refining precious metals with other forum members. Study of the forum will give you an understanding of electronic scrap, fill in a few gaps that Hokes did not teach, and give you a place to learn just about everything where these precious metals are concerned.

Welcome to the forum, you picked a very complicated subject for a hobby, but if you like learning and the yellow metal you have picked a great place to learn this new hobby.

To get the furthest the fastest in this field, starting with the books and study (not with the acids), will get you closer to melting that gold in your dish. Than would losing gold in the acids, and having to search the books to find where all of your gold is disappearing to.

I would prefer to have a hard copy of the book, help the long nights at work go by quicker. But until then the electronic version will do.

If you have access to a laser printer, you can print out a hard copy of your own at very low cost (ink jets get expensive). The link to the printer friendly copy of her book is in my signature line.

If you prefer a commercially printed version like butcher, the best deal is from a company called Gesswein at Hoke's book at Gesswein. It's $54.75. Shipping is a little steep so the total is between $65 and 70.

Thanks Dave, I actually don't have a working printer. Also with trying to search for a copy of it led me to two places, eBay and Amazon. Both of which had listings selling electronic copies and physical which were sometimes listed over $700. But no where did I find the link you shared, of which I thank you.

I'm happy to pass along the link. That's where I bought my hard copy. If I'm not mistaken, I believe it was GoldSilverPro who originally provided them as a source.

Actually, Harold was the one that discovered Gesswein. I just passed it along.
For that you can thank my close affiliation with the jewelry industry, which comprised the vast majority of my refining business.
Been reading accounts of the percentage of margin in refining these days. Frankly, I'm shocked. My timing, in so far as my refining career is concerned, had to be perfect. The world was more than ready for the guy who could accept waste materials for processing and turn them in a week or less.

I used to get anywhere from 8% up to 15% for my refining fee. The customer was more than happy to pay the fee, after having been ***** by larger refiners on an ongoing basis. What they say and what they do isn't always in keeping with reality.

Harold
