I'm not even sure I belong here, but if I can learn then I want to, lol. I have 3 computer stores and 2 gold buying businesses. I am interested in learning more about scrap because I trash lots of computer parts everyday. I have also considered melting my gold and selling it in bars.

Welcome! I'm fairly new as well. I think the only ones who don't belong here are the people who join and immediately post a new thread asking how to go about an entire process before doing the research on their own. As far as learning, I bet you can! It appears to me not to be about the level of difficulty but the willingness to do the research and use common sense (at least for the basics) And hey if you decide you don't have the time or effort you can always sell me your scrap :p (or to the other members)

It is not adviced to melt the gold before it is refined - except for inquartation. I am fairly new, too, but there are some good reasons not to do it. At first a bar would take eternities to dissolve in acid, unless it is rolled and cutted into small pieces again. Second: In karat gold there will probably be silver, evt. palladium (white gold), too, which you would not get paid for. Third: Plenty of 9's are good for your reputation among your customers, since it will be high quality your name stand for. Fourth: You will know, how much gold you have for real and know what price you have to get paid for it. Fifth: Pure gold is easiest to melt and to get good results.

Those all are points I only read on the forum and in Hoke's book. I don't want to pretend I was an expert, I am not.

Total-resale - That is an idea I have. I want to find out what the stuff I have is worth. I might be interested in a joint venture with someone.

solar-plasma - I don't understand most of what you have said. I hope with time and research I will though.

I see alot about using this as a base line for prices http://boardsort.com/payout.php#
from what I understand they sell to refiners so the actual PM value is higher then that once recovered, saying you can recover everything. I am only shooting for the Gold and palladium atm so i offer less then their pricing when I buy.

That's pretty cool. The only thing better would be a local guy that wants to partner with me on the process.

Yeah shipping costs = lower profits
Here's my take but remember I have very little exp. actually refining so maybe just to give you ideas...
if you want to make $$ Ebay seems the way to go because people are paying more than the true value of items (quite a few posts on here about that)
I'm a pretty active seller on Ebay and there is a learning curve to this too. I'm actually in the middle of experimenting if breaking down the boards manually, sorting and selling individual components in bulk is more profitable then selling the boards whole. I imagine it is but I'm not sure if it will be once i calculate the time involved.
I'm keeping all my Gold fingers for processing, haven't decided yet if I will keep the IC's cause the recovery process seems a bit more tedious.
