yeah I've read this and I've used this for identification of items, but it's not complete.
I think he's a member.

I try to download but it want me login to facebook. I don't like facebook and I'll never will. I try the other day to get Hoke's book and it did the same thing. I wanted to put on my HP TouchPad. I have it on my desktop but right now it is in a box.

I still have to wonder about those red-banded capacitors on what I have to assume is page #8? The author identified them as silver cased subminiature tantalum. Other tantalum capacitors which I've collected without a red band (which have the metal bead at one end as the polarity identifier) are much heavier for the same size package. I'm wondering if the red-banded ones aren"t just ordinary aluminum electrolytic caps?

an easy test for that is to take one in question and try to flatten it with a pair of pliers. if the core is solid and cant be crushed thats what you are looking for. an aluminum electrolytic capacitor will flatten with little effort.

Great
But what about page 34
He states hd platers up to 35% platnium
We just had a huge discussion on this
I thought it came to a definite myth or not
even enough to make any kind of profit

thanks

why dont you try it for yourself? 8)
take a litter of HCl ,put your disk in, wait until it all disolve, than put the foil in hot aqua regia,
you can after that compare your platinum yield with us and see if we all find the same average  yield in them
dont forgot than in the saying up to 35%, they is not a minimum of %

thats from the film on the platter which is only less than 1 percent of the weight of the platter. so that would be 35% of 1% by weight.

Actually I have read much on the subject
I guess that is why you hear/read a little
hostility
I am starting to have anger issues over mis
information
Wow kinda like you guys 8)

The information is there if you care to read and understand it. The key words "in the magnetic layer"

Thing is, you need enough knowledge/experience to quickly weed out the bad information. The more you know, the less time you'll waste dealing with it. I don't get angry over it, but I surely post some questions or corrections.

A lot of bad info is easy to spot by even a reader with only a little knowledge. On the other end of the spectrum, there is Dr.Poe, who is about 50% BS, but hides it very well. Very hard to separate the wheat from the tares.

The file was originally compiled by a fellow who use to be a member here. I gather and compile information so like Chris said the only way to know if it is right is by experience and intuition.
I do know that when he posted it that he stated it was not complete and that it was a work in the making.
