Applying 14k acid on gold

Hi I am new to this forums I had a question regarding applying Acid directly on the gold .

So I know that when you apply 14 K acid directly on 10K gold turns it brownish but I also have a 14K gold piece that also turns a little brownish but it passes the 14K scratch test any ideas?

With acid tests the best way to become competent with the results is regular testing so you learn to compare the results, the acids gain much of the color of the stain from the base metals particularly the lower karat items so try the 18k acid on the 14k item, it’s all a learning curve I’m afraid.
