Hi there,
I am hoping for some guidance! I have ended up with a few coils of gold wire, its 0.0315" dia and the total is approximately 106 grams combined.

Lab analysis of the actual chemistry show the composition as around 70% Au, 22% Ni & 8% Pd.

I am a total novice, so please bear with me - is there any safe way to separate the three components?

Sorry for my ignorance, as mentioned I am very new to this, predominantly I am interested in extracting the Au for obvious reasons, but research lead me down track of confusion, so I had hoped someone might be able to help me out with some advise that doesn't make my head hurt!

Is it possible to separate these, how would it rate in difficulty level and is it likely to yield enough precious metal to make the endeavour worthwhile?

I am sorry if this is a tad lacking, hopefully it's enough info to start on!

Thanks in advance!

MikeJB, Welcome to the gold refining forum.
If your goal is to get gold.
Sell it to a gold buyer, and buy gold.

If your goal is to spend your time learning a complicated science in order to learn these skills, you can begin by
studying to gain an understanding of the many dangers involved, understand how to deal with toxic metal waste solutions for safe and legal disposal, Learn the recovery methods, learn how to refine gold.

This is not that easy skill to master, you can study it for the rest of your life and only understand a small portion, but if you are willing to spend your time, the forum is a great resource of information and help in your study of this science.

I suggest beginning with the safety section and Hoke's book, reading the guide to the forum, ...

Hi there,

Thanks for the reply!

To be honest, my goal is a bit of both. Hands up, I had no real interest until I started researching, but I have to concede I found it very interesting and wouldn't mind giving it a go!

I'll try and read up more, see if I cant get my head around it a bit clearer before deciding anything!

Thanks

It's nice stuff. Assuming it checks out at the numbers you say it's probably better sold "as is." If you want to learn to refine then I'd use other product to do that.

This is similar to karat gold, it could be marked, or tested for the gold content using simple tests, and thus gold buyers will buy your product and give you a fair price, but like karat gold, if we refine it to pure gold we will have a harder time selling it, the gold buyer cannot test for pure gold and will only give us the highest karat that he can test for (around 22K), so we would have to sell it to a refiner anyway...

Take old silver coins, for example, the coins have a known silver content, and buyers will pay accordingly, but if you walk in with a melted bar of pure silver they would not know the silver content and would be less likely to buy it from you...

Gold fever? It may not be a cure, but education can relieve you from many of the symptoms.

That is interesting, hadn't really thought if it like that...

I guess I just assumed that pure whatever would be the preference, but I see your point.

Okay, so first idea was daft - but I would like to try my hand at the practice. What would you suggest for a first go?

I'm not looking to make a profit (don't much fancy a loss though!) Just want to try out the process in a safe way, see what comes of it. Hot flame always took my fancy..!

Tha is for the contributions and advice.

I should add, I have no intention of attempting anything in practice until I feel I fully understand the process and how it can be safely done.

There is so much information out there, I'd like to narrow down the 'study area' as it were.

I deal with chemicals on a daily basis in my employment and know the dangers they can pose, used at my own premises without the correct safety measures does not take my fancy.

And yes I know fire contains many risks too, especially at the high temperatures needed, but in theory at least, it seems a more manageable risk at this time!

MikeJB ,

I would start with an easy material, to begin with, like memory fingers or Karat Gold (like the wire you have now).
Now that you have the material in mind you can then study the processes for that material, study the safe use of the chemicals involved, understand the reactions, what to expect, and how to deal with the toxic gases and how to safely and legally deal with the toxic waste solutions, what equipment you actually need that will hold up to the labwork, where you can set up a small lab safely.

I would start with Hoke Book, along with the safety section (dealing with waste...), doing the getting acquainted experiments in her book will introduce you to the chemistry of these metals, giving you a better understanding of the reactions involved.

Memory fingers an easy material, to begin with, the reactions can be safer for the beginner to deal with, you can recover the gold foils after etching the copper and nickel (cupric chloride leaching process mistakenly called AP) leaving you with gold foils, and refine the gold foils without using aqua regia or nitric acid using either bleach or hydrogen peroxide with HCl...

Karat gold is also fairly easy, the gases are much more toxic. chemicals like nitric acid are costly or harder to get.

Do not just start by buying and mixing chemicals and metals after you think you know it all.
Spend the time studying so that when you do go buy the materials you Know what you actually will need, know how to use them safely, and how to deal with the waste...
welcome members.
Laser Steves Guide to the forum.
Hoke's book and getting acquainted experiments.
Dealing with waste, and situations to avoid...
Help needed --getting gold pure and shining.
Educating yourself is how you learn the value of these metals, and how to recover and refine them safely.

Blindly experimenting, and asking questions about the simple basic chemistry, without educating yourself is just dangerous and a stupid way to try and learn.

With a little study (which is actually fun to learn), you learn the principles to safely recover and refine these metals...

It is quite easy to separate ,gold from ni and pd-----people are making dificulties to you------to the 100grams of wire add around 200 cc of distilled water plus 200cc of nitric acid----the gold foils will float in the solution---filter and catch the gol in the filter paper--- the liquid after filtering the gold, will have the pd and the niquel-----add dmg and you form pddmg---filter and to the liquid add naoh to ph8 or9-----probably you will obtain the nidmg-----your gold will be almost pure---more then 90%---if you need purer gold ,use ar ,and precipitate with meta bisulfate------basically these is what you have to do-----

I'm sorry but I'm not making difficulties for him at all Arthur. I'm suggesting he saves himself a lot of time and work and sells it based upon the values in the wire.

That's saving him difficulties dont you agree? 8) 8)
