Hello,
This is my first try in extracting gold from old computer parts.
I started my process with both pci slots(fingers)(well cut) and cpu pins, an pinless cpus at the same time(some ceramic pinned cpus included). I put them in nitric acid. The outcome happened to be very muddy. Most of mud stayed in paper filter so I put it(paper filter) in aqua regia(3:1 ratio) too after drying it. Aqua regia didnt dissolve gold pieces. So after 2 days I added more aqua regia(again 3:1 ratio). As it didnt dissolve the some gold fingers and pins still, I boiled it.
Now what I have is a blue crystals at the bottom of the beaker about 1 finger thick.
What is this blue crystal :?:
How should I proceed :?:
Did I discover/invent a new element? :p
How can I get my gold :?:
Every kind of help will be appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

mmetem,

Welcome to the forum, thank goodness you're still breathing normally, those gases not only contain toxic metal fumes but also make acid out of your lungs, the salts will poison the water wells you and your neighbors drink from, as well as the rivers and the soil around you.

You will not get gold the way you are trying now, it will not work and is very dangerous.
Here on the forum, you can learn how to recover gold safely and learn how to refine it safely.

What is this blue crystal :?:
My guess is it may be Chloride salt of metal ions possibly copper nickle cobalt...

How should I proceed :?:
Stop! Before you kill yourself or harm those around you you have not one clue of what you are attempting, you do not know anything about gold recovery, much less anything about refining, or anything about how you are a danger to those around you.

Did I discover/invent a new element? :p
Yes, you could always name it after yourself, or just it could be just called it one deadly dangerous mess.

How can I get my gold :?:
Stop! Before you kill yourself or harm those around you you have not one clue of what you are attempting, you do not know anything about gold recovery, much less anything about refining, or anything about how you are a danger to those around you. educate yourself start with the basics dealing with toxic the waste safely.

Every kind of help will be appreciated.
I hope this will help you forget about trying something so dangerous, that you know absolutely nothing about, chemistry, mixing acids with metals is deadly business, not something to take lightly, educate yourself...

Hi Butcher,
Having read a private message from a fellow from forum and your response here(which I just saw, due to my notification settings I guess) I decided to not proceed anymore until I am sure of where I am and what I am doing.

Having been cautious about acids, all I have been doing was in open air, where neither I nore any people around had no danger of fume.
Again I haven't disposed of anything until I willl be sure what they are and how to get rid of any waste or outcomes in best way.

Your links and comments are very useful. I will take time to go through all them and hopefully be back asking for further information/advise later on.

Thank you for your help.

What a welcome change your post makes.

Recently we have had so many people who throw their toys out of the pram (or spit their dummy out, take your choice of analogy) when they hear something that they don't want to hear.

I hope that you get the chance to read, and learn properly and I look forwards to seeing you here again when we can be of even more help to you.

Jon

mmetem,

You are an intelligent man, The real value is understanding, something that does not come easy of fast when working with a complicated field of work, and especially one which can be so dangerous without that
understanding.

Each material may take a different process, sometimes we have a choice in the way to process the materials, for example, we may wish to avoid making a metal chloride of the silver so we can choose a different recovery or refining process to obtain the same goals.

Recovery and refining are two different processes, each with their own complications.
Recovery will consist of pre-treatment processes which may include mechanical separation, pretreatments like removal of unwanted materials or metals like lead or tin, roasting ore...

This field of work is complicated and is a vast science which will take some time in learning, many men have spent their whole life studying and working in this field, and could spend another 10 lifetimes studying and only gain an understanding of a small portion of this vast science.

This is also a science which has been kept as a guarded secret for most of history, sometimes purposely shrouded in mystery or pseudo sciences and magic as alchemy, even now misinformation in this field of work is abundant, very little is known by the general public, which often promotes more misinformation on the web through lack of understanding or of some other reasons...

This forum has been a breakthrough in the history of this field of work, those that have been fortunate enough to gain a lifetime of research, education, understanding, and skills in this field of work, actively sharing the information with other professionals working in this science, and professionals helping those wishing to learn as a hobby or to improve their understanding of the precious metals and how to recover and refine them, because of the forum these secrets have been let out of the bag, and knowledge from around the world is collected and shared freely, ....

Gain an understanding of the dangers (), and then spend some time learning how to preprocess your materials for recovery of values, and then study the recovery methods (like the copper chloride leaching process mistakenly called the AP or acid peroxide process) and then study the refining processes...

it would be easier to begin your study on an easier material to work with, like karat gold, or memory fingers, where you can gain an understanding of the science or chemistry and its reactions without too many complications.

mmetem, You may not have discovered a new element, so sorry to say but, we may not be seeing your name on the periodical chart, but it is good to see your name added to the fine members here on the forum sharing our secrets with each other.

Take care, my friend
