Hey all,

I ran into a lady that has a 70's style all metal double wide and wants it gone. Seeing if anyone has done anything like this?
I believe its 60ft with 6 axles. The problem I see with is scrap iron here is worth a whole .01 cent a lb. $20 for a ton. The metal yard is approximately 30 minutes away. So I don't even know if the gas would even be worth it let alone the time. Anyone know how much those axles can weigh? There is still appliances left. I'm pondering on the scrap copper content...I'm guessing this might be one of those jobs needed to pay someone to haul it off.

Take care,
Andrew

If you want to lose money, take the job. You can not make anything scrapping trailer homes. I've been scrapping full time for 27 years and I know what I'm talking about. And, I'd be looking around for another scrap yard because the one you mention is a rip-off.

Hey SS,
I was hoping you would chime in, cause I know how you do some big projects. :)
The problem with the metalyard is pretty much all of them I've seen around Colorado to be that way. I couldn't believe
those prices. (Rediculous) Back home I remember scrap iron floating around 18 to 20 cent range and dropped to 10
cents before I left. I've scrapped for along time too just never anything this large.
Thanks for the help,
Andrew

First consider the option of an addition. After, if no, then...

I sell the flatbed left, after a teardown, for $350 to $400 regularly. Watch the tailswing! They are wanted as car hauler trailers. The rims are a pass / fail choice. Split rims fail. You'd have to change out the rims, and cost much profit right there - I don't.

Aluminum siding, copper tubing, and wire, and trims from round the doors and windows add up to about $600 last time I had a double wide. ( Been a while. )

Customer always pays trash bin, plus $600 - $1000 fee - up front. I do OK. Takes 3 -4 days, labor and gas is paid by the fee. Always a bit left over. $600 is the cheapest I ever did a single wide for.

Drive the flatbed to city, loaded with the scrap, probably get $300 easy for the bed. Leave the floor on or off, your choice. Always seems to be a guy who wants that.

Reputation for sweeping up after, gets you more work, but you wont want that, after one, until you're broke. :p

Thanks for the reply METLMASHER
I was curious about these axles. As for the weight I'm a one man team right now. I spoke with a roll off provider that wanted to charge $100 drop off fee. I like the trailer idea. The one cent a lb still just throws me for a loop. :(

I actually live and work in Cripple Creek area. But stay down in the Springs area on my weeks off. Work is one week on one week off...

One cent a pound is offensive. You'll make no money on steel that way. A very rough estimate of steel only, ( ( which I never sold except as trailer frames ( A double wide has two, $350.00 to $400.00 ea., Oregon prices. ) ), between 2 and 4 tons steel, = $40.00 - $80.00

You mentioned roll off, is that a flat fee for dumpster, or just the drop-off? We pay tonnage beyond that.

My post was more as an eye opener to ways you may not have thought about, and fees for the work, which you hadn't mentioned. Prices were a while back, here in Oregon.

At the last teardown, we had to go 70 miles or more, to a scrap yard with decent prices, but gasoline was paid for easily, compared to local prices on scrap. Your mileage may vary,

If I had land that I owned, I'd get $ to haul 'em away, and put my new double wide shop on it, and get the mine running. Hauling them is $800 each, minimum here, by some shady, but quick haulers I know of.

You have options, and study to do, ( craigslist ), but unless you want a shop, or a rental home / remodel, it sounds weak.

Its a flat fee that one of the penny yards offered. I believe she said it was close to a 30yd roll off. But basically your paying
them to haul it off. (With their prices/lb) I think you guys are right though its just a weak idea. Maybe find 3 more
and build a square compound out by NORAD. (Got land out that way.) My Dad used to tell me about building the walls and such in there when he was in the construction trade. But that's another story.
Thanks for your time
Andrew
