Good day to every gold refiners forum member. I got hooked on the idea of gold in computers from a ole time scrapper I know from work. He mentioned that there was gold in them & had a friend refine the gold for him. I thought.hmmm how hard can it be? Well it seems harder than one would think. I watched almost every you tube video on gold refining computer scrap and came up very flustered. Then I found this site. I have read Hokes book twice now and have read many posts on this forum. I hope I can avoid many mistakes by learning what I have read on here. I hope to get to the end of that mysterious rainbow and find that pot of gold before my time comes.

Blissman,

Welcome to the forum. The best thing I can say about youtube videos is that some of them will lead you here. While there are a few good ones (usually created by members of this forum), most are incomplete if not downright dangerous.

Hoke's book, on the other hand, provides a solid foundation for any beginning refiner. Since it was written in 1940, it does not deal with recovering precious metals from ewaste. It was also written in a time when acids, especially nitric acid, were much less expensive and much more accessible. You'll find plenty of information on ewaste here, as well as workaround methods that do not require you to purchase nitric acid.

Here are some links I think may be of help as you begin this journey.

The first rule is to be safe in everything you do. Before you jump into any of the processes you see discussed here, be sure you understand the potential hazards and do everything you can to minimize the risks. Read EVERYTHING in the Safety section of the forum, especially the Dealing with Waste topic. No amount of precious metal is worth jeopardizing your health or the health of those around you.

I strongly encourage all new members to follow the Guided Tour created by LazerSteve. It will provide an introduction to the forum and numerous valuable links including the General Reactions List. Be sure to follow the link to his web site as he has many outstanding videos, a collection of great reference documents, and he sells a lot of the supplies needed to get started including detailed instructional DVDs. Samuel-a also has a lot of videos, guides and tutorials at his web site Gold-N-Scrap.

You'll also find a tremendous amount of information in the two Forum Handbooks compiled by aflacglobal, Forum Handbook Vol 1 and Forum Handbook Vol 2.

Once you understand the basics you can start to try some small scale experiments. If there's something you don't understand or you get stuck, there will be someone here to help you.

Best of luck,
Dave

How true that statement is!

Welcome to the forum. Be ready for an overload of brain cells, there is so much here it can be overwhelming at times. But it is well worth it in the long run.

Thank you for the positive encouragement. I have been all over this site for sometime now. I started my downloading and reading adventure quite some time before i decided to become a member. I feel I have quite a bit of understanding on the process i shall be starting with. I have had safety ingrained into my head for many years. I know all to well about the dangers of mixing the wrong chemicals from my work @ a plating shop. One drop of this mixed with one drop of that and kaboom or choke cough gag and guess what methylethyl bad junk you just inhaled. Now I'm going back to the garage and continue to dismember the boards I have and eliminate all the golden parts they contain.

Hey Blissman!
Great to have you here on the forum! Not long ago I was new like you are. With what I learned from Hoke's book, the posts and videos here and on Samuel-a's and LazerSteve's site and the help and encouragment of the wonderful members, I've produced some pretty good gold and have a skill that I'm proud of. It takes time, patients and work on your part
Welcome and good luck
