Hello all,

I realize this may be an old subject. But I'm in need of a fume hood, and I don't have a lot of money, also I'm not that much of a carpenter (don't have any tools) either. If anyone knows about where and/or how I can obtain an affordable hood, are some very easy instructions on how to create on, I'd really be appreciative.

Thanks in advance!

Search the forum.
It can be done in many ways.
Some has used large plastic containers like 265 gallon IBC containers and such.
Old cabinets and so on.

I think it was @4metals that posted a picture of one made from an 50 gallon plastic barrel. It all depends on how big of a fumehood you need, but there are a lot of examples on the forum of how to make the(m) on a budget.

In consideration of the entire fume hood question the drum hood in the photo is only part of the system. You still need a blower capable of extracting about 400 CFM air from the hood. (opening about 18"x30")
This blower, as configured for the ductwork shown will see corrosive fumes so it needs to be a corrosion resistant blower. If you go to the library and look up the thread for building a hood with a plain steel blower you will find options.

As far as using the funnel on top, for the price I would be just putting a hole in the top and sucking out of the flat drum top.

As far as the pricing of plastics I witnessed a job which the environmental permitting and local politics held up for 3 years. The pricing of the hoods and PVC or Polypro tripled in that period of time. The quotes were only valid for 2 to 4 weeks because of price increases and it was blamed on politics but it was greed of the oversea shipping prices and middle men in warehouses. Since then the prices have leveled off but not come down. As even the lowly powder funnel in this thread shows!
