Has anybody ever bought gold plated flatware for the gold content? if so, was there much gold? I bought a couple of pieces of flatware at an auction this weekend for a pretty good price - I think - $1.80 total for the set of 2. I did some research on the net and couldn't find the exact same pieces although I found gold plated utensils with the same design - "bamboo" by Ricci - so I'm not sure about what I have. They appear to have never been used and are in excellent condition so I don't think they've lost any gold plating through wear. I'd like to buy more if I see them at other auctions so any help would be much appreciated!

If they are so cheap you can do the electric cell. It it the fastest way for stripping the gold :) You will have the gold content in less than 1 hour.

I once consulted for a company that was gold plating about 50,000 pieces of flatware and serving pieces per day. The gold thickness was about 7 millionths of an inch thick. That would make 1 sq.in. of gold plating worth about $0.075. I would be surprised if your pieces are any thicker. Therefore, if I am right, it will take a total of about 24 sq.in. of gold plated area, in order for you to break even. Anything above that will be your profit.

Please note that the above is only from my experiences. There may be some companies that plate flatware thicker than this. I just have never run across them.
