Hi! My name is Kyle and I'm a complete newbie to all things related to precious metals. I'm a 3rd year medical student and I had a few free months on my hands after taking a licensing exam, so I started buying storage units. In one storage unit, I found a bunch of jewelery, and I ended up taking it to a guy who buys scrap gold. He is a customer of my father's business, so as a favor to my dad he sat with me for a few hours, sorted through all my jewelery and educated me about gold and silver scrap. When all was said and done he handed me a check for almost $1000 and I was thrilled. He also offered to let me work in his company as a gold buyer having gold buying parties and stuff. I am interested in doing that, but that is what got me searching the net for stuff about scrap gold. I have quite a few computers, old cell phones and stuff like that from my storage units, as well as an immodest amount of gold plated jewelery. I reckon that the gold plated jewelery will get me more money at a consignment auction than I will get for the gold if I refine it, but not so with the "antique" computers and phone. I'm also fascinated by mad scientist stuff, so gold refining seems like a fun hobby to get into. I'll freely admit that after I finished taking chemistry in undergrad I promptly forgot almost everything about it, so I have some catching up to do on the science front, but so far I'm enjoying this forum a lot and I'm eager to learn as much as I can. Ideally I'll find a way to set up a small lab where I can refine some electronic scrap for fun and hopefully a little profit on the side. I want to thank all the posters here for the great information!
