Hello everyone. I'm new to refining and am quite fascinated by some of the useful (and more interesting) threads I have read here.

I stumbled across this forum while looking for information on refining some old waste for it's silver content. I will probably be asking for input down the road to see if my plan would put me or my environment in peril, but I have some reading and research to do first... Yes... I will be reading the 80+ year old book by Hoke to garner relevant information before posting any questions here. Lung heath (and physical) along with my local river will also have me looking through the other relevant sections both in the forum and anywhere else I can scrounge data from on the web.

It looks like most individuals active on this forum are really decent people and very knowledgeable.

Looking forward to future discourse(s).

Welcome to the forum and thank you for that excellent approach! I wish all would see that's the best way to start.

Be safe and have fun!

As Martijn has said already, welcome:)

You said you already has started on Hokes book, may I ask where you got it?

Anyway here is a study list for the forum.

1. Read C.M. Hokes book on refining jewelers scrap, it gives an easy introduction to the most important chemistry regarding refining.
It is free here on the forum: Screen Readable Copy of Hoke's Book
2. Then read the safety section of the forum: Safety
3. And then read about "Dealing with waste" in the forum: Dealing with Waste

Suggested reading: The Library

There is at least one pdf version floating around on the web. However, nothing about it would indicate that is a legit copy, nor fair use. As such I have checked out a copy from my library to go through.

Refining Precious Metal Wastes has not been under copyright protection for many years. Anyone can publish the book. There are several versions available through links found on this forum.

Dave, known here as Frugalrefiner, went to a lot of effort to format the book into both screen readable and printer friendly versions. Both versions are free. Links can be found in Dave’s signature line.

I bought a copy new several years ago. I still see hardbound copies offered from time to time. The fact that a local library had a copy available is, to me, unusual.

Note to Yggdrasil: Check both Amazon and EBay, prices are a bit high, however. Also, Legend, Inc has soft bound copies available at about $30 plus shipping, which to you might be prohibitively expensive.

Time for more coffee.
