Hello!
I'm stunned at the size of this forum , and yet at the same time not surprised, with the power and history of "gold fever" as it has always been.
I'm 53 years old and have been scrapping both part and sometimes full time from age 8 or so.
With the gold (and other metals) prices dropping lately I am looking at my little collection of computer and electrical scrap and not so much worrying about a bit of scrap profit as I am thinking it would be a much more rewarding effort to try to glean a tiny nugget for personal satisfaction.
As a bit of an artist I think to produce on little item out of good material that I would not otherwise buy for that pupose is a worthy personal goal, cash is good too but not nearly as much fun as an enduring creation of my very own.
I hope at some point I can give as well as receive from this forum, at this point it's a bit overwhelming to see all the input.
Thanks
Jer

Thank you Sma,
As with a few other forums I have registered with over the years I see there is a mountain of info to peruse .And I have to be honest (just my nature) I won't understand most of it for a while.
I am in no great hurry to start dumping jugs of nitric acid on things but, what a great forum you have here, sort of a temple of alchemy.
My coming in here is kind of like riding a mule into a church............wearing a ballet outfit on top of that.

No Alchemy here, amigo. From Wiki:
Alchemy is an ancient tradition, the primary objective of which was the creation of the mythical "philosopher's stone," which was said to be capable of turning base metals into gold or silver, and also act as an elixir of life that would confer youth and immortality upon its user. Alchemy can be viewed as a protoscience, a precursor to modern chemistry, having provided procedures, equipment, and terminology that are still in use. However, alchemy also included various non-scientific mythological, religious, and spiritual concepts, theories and practices.[Bold and italics mine]
Yeah, like "bleeding, blistering, and purging" were precursors to modern medicine. :p
Maybe the Temple of :
Metallurgy
Physics
Chemistry
Finance
Self-Sufficiency ...
But i know what you mean. About your church attire - Hey, man, thats your business!! :p

How do you perceive MN's feelings about scrappers? Some members have felt put off by state policies. Hope you can find a work-around!

Edit: clarity

first, welcome to the forum. you will find more information here than you will be able to process for a long time.
second, try to refrain from using the word "Alchemy" on the forum. theres no rule about it or anything like that but you will be informed by many well meaning members that alchemy has no place here and they would be correct. chemistry is a must for almost all processes discussed here but alchemy is a touchy subject. that being said, please feel free to browse, post and ask questions.

Okay, I walked right into that but if I can learn what not to do or say first I'll be OK
And thanks it good to meet you too.
I haven't been badly affected by any state agencies personally but I am not a large scale metals dealer, We have the same EPA,PCA,DNR, EPA and all the other abbreviated agencies any other state has.
I try to use some common sense when it comes to the way I break down any materials with respect toward our earth, air,and water,
I think other laws restricting sales and transport of metals are geared toward stopping theft and I can't argue that since I've been hit by thieves out here for the first time in almost thirty years, and that hurt .
Thanks again

loss is something we all have to deal with in one way or another. if you are interested in refining its the loss of of your precious metals that we can help you with. im sorry to hear about the theft. i live in a rural area and we still have a bad element of society around here because i still lose a battery or a tank of gas ever so often. if my pit bull ever gets a good bite on one im sure it will be the last time.

Geo, I read not to long ago of someone in the forum that let some "gas" containers, full of water, outside & some one stoled them; the thieves put it in their car gas tank & oooops!
There was a car parked across the street for a while...

sounds like a helluva idea. now as long as I dont pick up the wrong can ill be ok.

Welcome to the forum. Read and understand the safety section first then read Hoke's book to learn the recovery / refining of the PM's.
At one time I had a problem with gas thieves; they were taking it right out of my car. I got a smaller tank and put it in the trunk and sugared the regular tank. A few days later the gauge showed I had been hit again. Several kids some in their late teens were riding their dirt bikes and other stuff on the adjoining acreage after a while they were pushing the bikes and such home. I have had no problems since. Hard lesson well learned.

It's hard to believe I have been coming here for over a year.........
I don't sign in as often as I would like but whenever I come here I am sucked in for several hours at a time, every time!
Every question I could think to ask has been asked and answered several times over .
That is why I haven't posted very much.
I feel no need to clutter any place other than my 1 acre of land filled with rusty jagged treasures and hints of real gold here and there.
Thanks! to all of you for laying it all out in the open.
And yes, I have read Hokes and I keep re-reading as I don't seem to retain as much as some.
It didn't take me long to realize that it could be a long time (if ever) before I would be able to make any attempt toward refining but I have learned a lot about collecting pm scrap which is a good area for me to advance in.
In my time here I have used the forum to sell a small lot of scrap and even returned a little by buying the GRF booklet.
Thanks again
Jer
