My name is Jean-Paul De Feyter and I am living in Belgium near the city of Ghent.
A couple of years ago, I inherited a lot of shredded, old silver and I recently found the time to research how to upgrade the value of this silver by refining it. I am especially interested in refining this using a safe process with minimal waste production. The "closed-loop" procedure of LaserSteve comes to mind.
I also believe, not sure though, that it is difficult to buy nitric acid here in Belgium; in any case a license is required and I am not sure you can get it as an individual person.
With the info made available here I hope to learn a lot and achieve my goal to refine this old silver.
Thanks for being able to become member!

Welcome to us.
There is much to learn and here is the place to find it.

Please study the book in the links and the other links as well.

1. Read C.M. Hokes book on refining jewelers scrap, it gives an easy introduction to the most important chemistry regarding refining.
It is free here on the forum: Screen Readable Copy of Hoke's Book
2. Then read the safety section of the forum: Safety
3. And then read about "Dealing with waste" in the forum: Dealing with Waste

Suggested reading: The Library
