Greetings,

I am new here and I wanted to introduce myself. This will probably be my last post for a while as I have a lot of reading to do. I just found and downloaded Hokes book and will start there.

My name is Greg Troy and I run a remodeling business in Mason, Ohio. I have become interested in silver recovery/refining and found this forum through a YouTube video on refining silver using the chloride method. I wanted to get detailed information before trying this to make sure it is done right and safely and it looks like I have come to the right place.

I look forward to participating in the forums once I have done my reading. Thank you all.

Greg

Glad to see you want to learn. Here is a great starting place: http://goldrefiningforum.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?p=6873#6873

Greg,

Welcome to the forum! It sounds like we have a lot in common. I'm in the Loveland / Milford area, I love silver, and I spent a few years rehabbing houses.

I hope you downloaded one of my versions of Hoke's book. You'll find a brief discussion of the silver chloride method in the introduction. There are better methods. It depends on what you're starting with and what you want to end up with.

Thank you all for your replies!

@etack - I can get nitric in concentrations of 10% to 70%. I checked on this before joining the forum as I knew I would need it for the chloride method on the video I saw.

@Claudie - Yes I very much want to learn this and do not mind doing the leg work needed to learn it. I just needed to find somewhere that had the information to do it safely and I think I'm in the right place.

@FrugalRefiner - Hey, you are VERY close to me, only about 20 minutes down the road. I'm not sure if it is one of your versions of Hokes or not but I did get a copy here on the forums and have just started to read it.

I am interested in any/all methods, I will have various types of silver ranging from .925 scrap (majority of my material) to industrial silver (contacts etc.) which I believe are a mix of silver and tungsten. My goal is to end up with .999+ I can melt into bars. If there are better methods I hope they will become obvious after Hokes and then reading the forums.

Thanks again for this wonderful forum!

I commend you for your attitude, and your willingness to read Hoke's book, which, in reality, is not a great primer for silver processing. Still, by reading her book, you'll become acquainted with terms that are commonly used on this board, plus you'll be better able to ask reasonable questions, the result of understanding the basics of refining.

You most likely will be far better served by not pursuing a silver chloride process, as recovering silver on copper tends to be somewhat better, although your circumstances may dictate otherwise. As you study Hoke's book you'll gain an understanding that may provide guidance in a different direction. That can be true if you get involved with materials that contain platinum group metals, where silver becomes the carrier.

Welcome to the forum. How I wish your example was the standard for new readers.

Though all needed informations about silver refining can be found in the forum, it has been easier for me to understand the details after I read C.W. Ammen's Recovery and Refining of Precious Metals.

No full-text:
http://link.springer.com/book/10.1007%2F978-1-4615-7721-8

It is no must-have, but it is a valid supplement and I think it is worth the money.

Thank you solar_plasma, I appreciate your input and will get a copy.

Harold, thank you for your advice and kind words. I greatly appreciate any/all advice from members of this forum as to methods of refining to consider. I have always enjoyed learning new things and have never been afraid to do the leg work needed to reach my goals. I will gladly read and study any threads or material that you or other members believe may help me learn what I need to know (searching can be daunting with the amount of threads listed in search results). I want to start out with silver recovery and refining and then may expand to other PMs. I have also ordered lazersteve's DVD about silver as I read all his videos are very educational and helpful.

As I mentioned I came across the YouTube videos of refining PM from scrap and found it fascinating. I only mentioned the chloride method (for silver) as it was the only video I saw where the final product was 999 fine silver. I assumed in refining the goal should be as high a purity as possible, I don't know, that is why I am here and going to read everything I can while keeping my ears open when the people who have been doing it speak. I learn very fast.

I am past the part in Hoke's book on silver refining and I agree with you that it was not what I was hoping for, but I did not expect to get all my answers from the first thing I read. I am reading it to get an understanding of the processes involved in PM recovery/refining, how it is done and how to do it safely so I do not cause injury to myself, my neighbors or the environment. I do find the book very interesting and informative though, I am making notes on things I want a better understand of for further study if not answered later in the book. Hoke likes to start to explain something I find interesting, then say it will be covered later in the book and move on. :)

My first goal here is to read and learn as much as I can and hopefully get a basic understanding of the processes involved which will allow me to ask intelligent and coherent questions about things I do not understand or need clarification on, which will lead to the more detailed information I need to study. Once I reach the point where it is time to start trials I will take all the information and advise to start some small scale experiments and gain the knowledge that can only comes from actually doing it and observing the results.

Again, I thank everyone here for their time, efforts and making this forum available. I appreciate being able to participate in it and learn.
