Hello everyone. I found this site this morning and have been reading it non-stop since signing up (though I should probably have been studying EKG rhythms). I used to be in construction for a couple of decades, where I learned the value of scrap metal. I always was able to supplement my paycheck handsomely and also got to tear things apart, which helped satisfy my curious nature of "how and why" things worked. I've known for a long time that there was quite a bit of gold to be had in many of the things I tore apart, and I always had a passing fancy that one day I might get around to learning how to get it for myself.

I've been laid off and subsequently happily out of the construction racket for five years now. I'm a full-time Paramedic student, working part-time as a self employed commercial janitor. I have had my eye on a nice .30-06 at the local arms merchant, and decided to take up scrapping as a means to pay for it - I figure the wife can't complain if it's bought with "found" money, right? We'll see. Anyway, I'm almost to my goal, and I came across a lot of e-waste this last week, which re-ignited my lofty dreams of getting that gold for myself rather than practically giving it away to the scrap yard. After finding this site and doing a lot of reading I have realized that, while I have a whole lot to learn before I can get started processing, it's something that I will be able to do. While I learn, I'll accumulate a pile of scrap.

I got a copy of Hoke's book and will work it into my reading schedule, and this site will officially become one of my daily visits, as well. I figure that between those two sources I will develop the strong background knowledge I will need to start dabbling in this. I likely won't be posting much until I'm ready to start, but I thought I'd take a moment to say "Hi." I would also like to say thank you to the site owners, mods, and members for sharing your wealth of knowledge, and for free at that. I look forward to using your experience to one day line my pockets. :p

duhghe,
I think you will really enjoy learning here, this is a fascinating subject, lots of great people to share Ideas with, it sounds like you already have a great start and will do just fine.

Just to warn you, gold plating on material always looks like a lot more gold than what is actually there, and this is one terribly addicting activity.

Welcome to the forum.
