Your credentials should be useful, as you have a leg up that many don't have. You understand chemistry!

Do yourself a big favor, especially if your interest is in processing karat gold. Read Hoke's book and digest the contents well. While you're most likely very familiar with the handing of chemicals, you may not understand the mechanics of refining in a useful way. She'll make that easy for you. And---do all of the familiarization procedures she provides. They help tremendously when it comes to identifying metals.

You'll realize that some of her "recommendations" (tossing on gasoline freely being one of them) are not to be followed, but the basics of processing gold she provides are very good, and will yield an excellent product, assuming you follow her instructions.

Welcome to the board.
