Can someone help me figure out how much does 10 feet of .001 gold wire weight, in grams? That's 10 feet of one-thousandths of an inch diameter pure 24K gold wire. Thanks, Steve

In the Handy Book for Manufacturers by Handy Harmon, which is available online somewhere, it only goes down to .00314 which in fine gold would be .0190 dwt per foot.
I have other books that I could look up platinum wire, but that is the closest I could get for gold.

Steve,

The volume of a cylinder is pi x radius squared x Length.

Since you want your volume in cubic centimeters you will convert your answer from cubic inches to cubic centimeters.

Once you have the volume of the wire multiply by the specific gravity of gold (19.3).

Here we go:

3.142 x (0.001 / 2)^2 x (10 x 12) =

3.142 x 0.0005^2 x 120 =

3.142 x 0.00000025 x 120 =

3.142 x 0.00003 = 0.00009426 cubic inches

Now we convert the cubic inches into cubic centimeters:

1 cubic inch = 16.387064 cubic centimeters

0.00009426 x 16.387064 = ~ 0.001545 cubic centimeters

Finally multiply by the density of gold (19.3 g/ cc)

0.001545 x 19.3 =0.0298 grams

Thank you Steve for doing the "Math".

One thousandth of an inch is the typical diameter of the solid gold wire inside IC's and some CPU's.
