Hi,
I’m totally new to this and have zero experience in precious metal refining but would love to start a small business buying, refining and selling gold.
I’m a London cab driver so I have loads of time on my hands and really want to start a sideline business to work from home and I find gold and precious metals really interesting.
What is the best book that will teach me how to refine precious metals?

A signature line is some text, and possibly links, that appears below every post a member makes. Mine includes links to two versions of C.M. Hoke's book. If you didn't notice it, I'm guessing you may be reading the forum on a phone. There is an odd quirk to phones. When they're in the upright (portrait) position, they don't display signature lines. But if you turn them sideways (landscape), the signature lines appear.

Yes I’m on an iPhone and even when I tip it sideways I still don’t see it.
Refing precious metal wastes by C M Hoke I assume is one of the books so I’ll order that today. Looks pretty in depth so looking forward to getting stuck into it..I really appreciate your help Dave, thanks mate…

Interesting. That usually works for most users. We have a moderator who has had the same problem, but I don't know what kind of phone.

Anyway, here are links you should be able to see.

Printer friendly copy of C. M. Hoke's Refining Precious Metal Wastes.

Hello Scott,

Welcome to the forum.

There is always a beginning to everything but do not take this lightly. Yes, Hokes book is a must read, start reading it between clients but there are orher things you need to consider as well, such as deciding what material you want to work with and finding the right material at the right price, you will need to learn the value IN - Value OUT relation and how you can make profit out of it if you want to do it as a business. You also need to invest in a proper safety gear and equipment and if you plan to do refining as well, then you will also need proper laboratory equipment as well (fortunately every information you seek, is available on this forum, use the search, if you dont find it, we are here to help).
Remember, you are not alone in this quest, if you are not absolutely shure what you are doing, ask first.

It is always fun to learn new thing but it is more exciting when you succed applying what you have learned.

Pete.

Cheers Pete,
I’ve got the business and lab side of it sorted (I think) I just need to learn how to refine.
I have a few ideas of where to source scrap jewellery from but if you know of any other sources that would be of help.
Cheers

Very well, but be aware, using chemicals in populated urban areas without proper evacuation and disposal will get you in trouble.

Sources of scrap:
PRO: flea markets, yard/garage sales, private persons who are willing to sell their jewelery for cash (yes i bought silver and gold jewelery from private persons, who no longer wanted those jewelery because of a divorce), IRS auctions, antique dealers, local district pawn shops (if you can get a good deal since they need to recover their investment) etc.
CONTRA: eBay, and other specialized web services since the products are way overrated and expensive, and usually full of scammers (a friend of mine got 2Kg of potatoes instead of gold plated jeweley :)) ... ).

Pete

I really appreciate the advice Pete, it’s clearly going to be a steep learning curve but I’m looking forward to it…
Welcome Scott 🙂
I am also quite new here on the forum. And also among precious metals (PM) and associated chemistry.

I did like many others (but not You), and searched desperately for a solution and help after doing what they do on e.g. youtube. This in the disappointment of having failed completely 😅, standing among a gigantic pile of various mixed acids, without having a clue how to solve it.

-I think your presentation and way of approaching this fantastic world of knowledge differed from most (including me) others who find this forum- You are looking for knowledge and want to learn BEFORE you start the lab👍
So now you have found the best forumsite available on the subject.
All professionals are available here, but we have to do the studying ourselves.
It will be exciting to have you on board. Good luck
/Dennis

Hi Dennis,
Thank you Dennis, It’s nice to meet someone else new to this industry and I would very much like to hear about your experience so far. We should keep in touch so we can help each other out.
Scott
