I need help... Please! I read thru a lot on this thread and not found what I'm looking for. It may be that I am not looking in the right places and it may be that I am ignoring the fact that I screwed up and don't want to admit it. Well I'm admitting it now and could use some help. I have about 16 grams of what I believe is part copper but Mostly gold. I have only melted down Jewelery before and not electronic components but I believe I know what molyen gold looks like. I have an oxy/actl torch and after my button cools it is noticable that there is still copper present. Here are some pics but my ? Is how do I remove it now

What is molyen gold?

What electronic components did you melt?

Why did you melt them?

You say that there is still copper present. Did you expect that melting the material would eliminate the copper?

Sorry I have no answers, only questions, but we need to know a little more to help you.

Sorry I misspelled molten.... No I wasn't expecting it to get rid of the copper I just didn't know the copper was there to begin with or else I would have tried to remove it. This is from computer electronics. It is my first go-around at trying to recover precious metals from electronics so I'm learning but probably taking some wrong steps but now that I have the gold in the state that it's in how do I separate the copper from it

You should be able to hammer the bead flat and toss some nitric acid on it. that should dissolve all the copper then you can wash and re-refine.

I guess by the looks , you have molten the recovered gold foils from fingers after you have removed it. I have a done the same (for testing purposes) with some mechanically recovered foils and my melt looked exactly like yours.

No panic, it is mostly copper some silver and around 3,5% gold by weight (if the melt is from fingers) I have manage 3,15g by weight (mixed foils old with new).
I did the same experiment with mixed 15 to 35% silver brazing rods (used for welding copper), but neither processes are feasable nor economical.

Proceed with regular process for removing copper.

You may experience a small loss on the way.

Be safe

Pete.

When you say "proceed with regular process for removing silver" what do you mean exactly?
Where can I get nitric acid? Im in the 29palms area of California?

I did not see a welcome, so welcome to us.

And to be able to talk the same "language" refining wise, we ask this from our new members:

1. Read C.M. Hokes book on refining jewelers scrap, it gives an easy introduction to the most important chemistry regarding refining.
It is free here on the forum:
https://goldrefiningforum.com/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=54&t=19798
2. Then read the safety section of the forum

3. And then read about "Dealing with waste" in the forum

As to add to Frugalrefiners reply, we need to be precise in our description.
Your description was a bit unclear, so if you would give us a better description we might be able to help.

Actually you need to do some reading first so you can give good information to the forum. The members will give good answers. The search tool is great you can be sure someone has done something similar. But start with CM Hoke. If you are dealing with Ewaste Don’t just start tossing stuff in acids until you know what you have. The results can be very dangerous.

If you just took some gold colored materials and simply melted them then what you have is mainly copper with very little gold, the color of the material looks to support that thought.
If you did anything else before melting please specify what and then perhaps we can help further.
