Lately I have been hitting up as many alarm places as I can. I seem to always find goodies in the dumpsters behind our local security companies. Yesterday i came out with over 30lbs of wire from one dumpster, plus over 15lbs of boards. Maybe let us in on where you guys seem to have the best luck. To all that read, be careful as some states have laws against dumpster diving.

Just don't be like me and grab everything that could be valuable or useful:
Like my 3 giant splice boxes packed full of PCB goo

Or my bottle of uranyl nitrate I found inside of a locked filing cabinet - I wanted the cabinet and when I got it home I was very surprised when I pried the lock.

There's a local electrician's shop that throws out all kinds of good stuff. In fact, I just pulled some nice #8 bare copper on my way over to my shop to check on things. I used to raid it on weekends before trash pick-up on Monday, but after a while they started putting a lock on it (a dude from one of the companies in the complex saw me diving it on at least one occasion). That made me sad :( Eventually they stopped putting the lock on it, but I don't raid it regularly anymore because it's too time consuming and there are too many petty thieves running about the neighborhood and I don't want to be out there when a cop happens to be driving by. The dumpster is right next to a main drag, so it's easy to be spotted.

When I get more organized I plan to ask them if I can just drop off a bin that they can fill up with their metal scrap, and when it's full to call me and I'll come replace it with an empty, then buy them a pizza or a 24 pack of beer or something as incentive. That way I don't have to waste my time digging around in their dumpster, they save on trash costs, I get some good scrap and they get some beer.

The beer is probably the most productive route. If you can stop by on Fridays near quitting time and provide some cold ones it is astounding what can come your way (with the owners permission of course). Common sense seems to leave peoples minds when they hear the words “free beer”.

With all the attention paid to incorrect information, on this forum, its my duty to correct it, since somebodies finally talkin about somethin I'M an expert in. "Free Beer" implies value . . .something that can be bought or owned . . .Countless hours in the field, with MANY other experts, has shown Beer can never be bought . . . just rented . . .nuff said!!

scuse me . . .pardon me . . .comin thru (noob returns to the cheap seats up in the bleachers)
