Was hoping someone could recommend filters/filter paper for the inquarting process after I dissolve the silver and base metals. I read that coffee filters are not recommended because they can tear easily. Any input would be great, thank you in advance.

I have been using Whatman #1 and occasionally #44. I also use a very few thick filters designed for filter press applications. As for brand, I got these from a friend that didn't need them and there were enough to last me for quiet a long time yet. I still have on hand some coffee filters, as well as filters especially for making tea. It comes down to particle size. Coffee filters being fairly porous and often allows larger size bit's through, good for very coarse filtering at times. The #1 is my go to filter and often the last filter I need, I keep it on hand in three different sizes for different funnels. Filters can be very dependent on the funnel you use. Do you use a regular funnel or a vacuum funnel?

Thank you for all the replies. Currently I do not have a vacuum filter but I do plan on purchasing a Büchner funnel/vacuum combo.

When not using a vacuum filter try a "charmin plug" . I use fiberglass to plug the hole in a regular funnel. How tight you pack the plug helps determine how fine of particulate it can remove. If you catch gold in it, you can run it through AR to recover it. It can be very useful at times.

Whatman 602 h class are the best in my opinion.

They will catch anything from 0.015 microns and above meaning you’ll lose no gold unless you’re working with awful quality plate which you should still recover you just probably won’t see it.

But 602h will be more than sufficient for any serious refine exercise.
